Its been awhile since I have posted anything good, and in fact, I havent had a good report yet this year. I have been hitting PINS every week trying to make something from this weed fest going on, but its been near impossible with the wind, the cold, the weed, and the waves. Desperate and aggravated, I saw a window of opportunity in the beautiful weather on Monday and Tuesday. After working a double on Sunday, I sit down have a few beers and begin to pack for one of the best shark trips down pins.
Getting a later than normal start Monday morning, we hit the sand by 10:00am and conditions were NOT in our favor. Weed was horrid, debris was just as bad, and the sand was by far worse. The weed and man-o-wars were creating a death mountain all the way down the shoreline. We had two trucks and 4 people, we were determined to make something out of this trip, and even though the waves were non-existent, the weed was like a blanket. I had been itching to make it all the way to the Jetties, so off we go on what may of been the worst driving conditions I had ever experienced.
Starting at the 1mile marker, driving was horrid. DEEP cuts, soft sand, and horrible ruts that felt like speed bumps. Maximum speed was 15-20 on short straight ways. We took a small break when we hit the 30mm and realize that it took us 2hours to get down 30 miles and began to ponder if it was worth going to the end. We look down the beach and noticed something we havent seen the entire trip... clearing in the weed. Literally 200 yards past the 30mm sign, the what felt like a sand pit turned into a hard packed sand highway. From the 30mm all the way to the end we were able to go faster and only have to slow down once for a log and a few washed up boats (4 in all on the beach).
Upon arriving at the jetty, the conditions couldnt look more perfect. We started seeing thousands of smacks slamming the water, seaweed wasnt even in the picture, and the water looked as blue as day. We unpack the Tacoma and my friends take off gathering firewood, while we set up camp. Without even knowing my old lady had put a line out and was already hooked up to her first of many fish on her trip measuring in at 30inches being her biggest redfish by 1inch.
Messing around and putting out some lines inside the channel and catching a few fish here and there we take it easy and call it a night after a few beers.
Come morning I get woken up out of my truck by everyone yelling my name and see Abby half a mile down the beach with a rod in her hand and I book it right behind her. She had thrown out a live mullet and literally set her rod down when it goes off. 45min later on 15# test she accomplishes what I have yet to, and completes one of her 2012 goals... a 40+ jack Cravelle . This one measured out at 42''.
After all the excitement, I walk back into camp to get my lines ready. One monster energy down, it was time to go to work. Explosions were going off in the water everywhere, and schools of mullet were boiling on both sides of the jetty. After about 10min my avet sx goes off and makes short work of our first shark this trip. ITS A LIL GUY!
We realized that out of the 30+ shark reels we own, we only brought 3... One which was cut off from the night before with sheepshead. I bait up the 50w with jack head and the 9/0 with sheepshead and off I went. As I dropped both baits, I wasnt even able to make it into land before I head the 50w SCREEEAAMING. It was on its way to Mexico. It came down to a do or die situation and he locked it down... breaking the blood knot. I convinced him to keep on fishing and we pulled the remaining 60# off the 6/0w to topshot the 50w and rebaited and sent it out there. 2 shark reels was better than 1. I was actually able to make it back in and as I was dragging the kayak in... the great growl of the 50 starts howling again, and after a quick 24min fight Kevin brings in this fat 6'9'' bull.
Down to half the jack and the 9/0 still sleeping, it was time to reset the 50w. I cut a smaller chunk than normal and sent it on its way while watching the jetty to drop it in the same general area as the last baits. I get back and this one was a no go at first so my lady starts cooking up the fajitas. Within 10 minutes the growl goes off again and its her turn up to battle her first shark. 45min later we pull in this beauty measuring out at 7'1'' and completing another 2012 goal.
I was out in the water quicker than anyone could realize resetting the 50w. I was caught up in anticipation for it to go off again, after I dropped the bait I flipped the yak and by the time I get back into it I saw my 9/0 had finally gone off and kevin ran for the hills to set the hook. Being exhausted, I paddled my butt off back in and harnessed up. Short quick fight but gave me a new species of shark.. EDIT *** 5'11 black tip
Have to cut it short, but not much other than a few reds and smacks were caught after that. Till next trip. Enjoy
