When fishing off the shoreline or off the jetties, what is the best type float to use. I have never used floats, except for the small ones I used to use when fishing worms on Central Texas ponds. I know some people use them when fishing for shark, etc.; I guess that's to keep the bait in the feeding zone and off the bottom so the crabs don't eat it all. I have seen reports of people catching good fish that way. Last time I fished, the bait seemed like it was gone quickly (I figured it was nibbled to death by crabs right or wrongly), and I decided I might do better if I got it off the bottom.
What do you all suggest? And as for as the floats, I have seen everything from Coke bottles to balloons, and I saw one that actually looked like a real, larger version of a float similar to those I used in the past, but I've not seen those in a store. If you use floats, what do you use?
Thanks!!

| I think that it depends what you are fishing for and where. Off a Jetty or surf pier I like lemon rig style. If its wading the bay or off a bay pier I like rattling corks. Offshore I have used balloons to float out a bait away from the kayak or rig. I have also done something similar off bhp to get a shark bait out on a reel I can't cast. Off the beach for shark people use them attached to the leader to help with abrasion and also to retrieve leaders and or weights if they are broken off or what not. The bait still sits around the bottom though. |
