Warning: the following report contains a exciting fishing adventure do not read if you are at work or there is a lightning storm outside! A/T is not liable for injuries you receive from attempting to recreate this adventure...unless you catch then its totally my fault
Should have known how the day would end up from the start...
accidentally set the alarm for 4P.M. instead of A.M...oops...
luckily i woke up right at 4 and was ready to go....check-in at 5 and off to the water...
I was joined by Oso/Fly (Joel) and his pops...they had a rough start also...curado caught a tree and was pulled out the crate...they didnt find it =/....
we went different ways....
i tried a spot that was risky but no go tides wayyyy too low
first light was on the horizon...time to start the redfish hunt
it was freezing...my toes were numb....reds didnt want to cooperate early in the shallow and sun wasnt high enough to see through deeper water...
Joel hooked into one red..but it spit the hook...
lots and lots and lots of shooting for opening day..at least 3 different fan boats of game wardens cruising around...
before the sun could help us see the mass of overcast moved in and we knew our sightcasting was over and done with ...no reds...
they moved on i stayed put content on finding reds..and i did
group of 6 reds hanging out..toss...twitch DRAG!
22"...pod moved on i strung and followed....cast twitch..DRAG!!!
26" i swapped them out..only wanted to take one to weigh in...this was a slot size tournament so i wanted one a little bigger....found the pod...picked out the biggest one..cast on its head and BAM!
27 2/8 inch Redfish on a tournament...i was on cloud nine...
i had the fish under my legs released the 26"...almost as soon as i let go of the 26" the 27" flipped twice perfectly and came out from under my legs and back into the water.....i was CRUSHED....i literally felt sick to my stomach..couldnt even stand back up to pole around anymore...denial was set in for a while as i chased every single wake i saw and blindly casted but it was no use....at this point the wind started to pick up...
i never had my spirit crushed so badly before i yelled out BREAD AND BUTTERRRR!!!....referring to my freakishly consistent skill to catch black drum...
found fishy water....anchored...started fast..had a quick limit...
it got slow as the wind calmed a little....joel and pops left the water defeated at this point it was 12 and weigh in was 3-5 so i planed on fishing no matter what....
soon i had to prove this...
the wind started gusting badly..i yelled a few choice words at mother nature and baffin as the waves started to crash over the back of my kayak....
then mayhem...one after another after another after another after another after another....i literally had no time to take a KW pic without getting hit....
i had drum stacked in my kayak while trying to get the pictures and my rods where still getting hit...
theres a 4th hidding in there somewhere...
at one point i had a FAT 25"+ Blackdrum yakside just to come off =(
the wind and wave was intense but it was going to get a lot worse...rain...it POURED on me for 15 minutes
so im sitting there in the wind and hard rain waves crashing...drum stopped for a second...Through struggle by as i lay dying comes on my speaker.....Hardcore guitar intro with the screams and yelling.....and my rod gets SLAMMED!
EPIC moment with the music environment and fish...drag running, drawn out battle...i can see a red tail come up 70 yards out....i start praying its a slot...
get it to the yak finally..
its going to be close...
took it to the shore to get a better measurement...
i have never been so disappointed to catch a oversized red...=(
the release...
i released it...turned around and a black wall of death was heading my way with winds to match....
i reluctantly loaded up the yak and started the rough paddle back....wind ..rain...waves...mothernature was mad and i could careless i love the rough water.....
the storm found it way around me....i look back to reflect on the day and how much ground i covered all day....and there was a nice big rainbow...
So end of the day results...
i threw back a 22" and 26" lost the 27 2/8" redfish....only 1 redfish was turned in and won it all at 25"...that one really hurt to hear
i caught and landed well over 40+ black drum...aside from the 25"+ that came off, they had no size to them...my biggest to weigh in was 18.5...24.5" won it third was 20"....this kind of hurt too since i dish out at least 5 or 6 20" drum when i hit em that hard =/
and i couldnt even catch a hardhead for the hardhead pot
it was just one of those days...by any means it was a great day for anybody..but to lose the winning redfish like that was just a bummer and i expected a much better result out of myself....im learning quickly though, i will be a tournament competitor one day..mark my words! |
