Monday the 24th we headed for Matagorda beach for a camping trip. We had planed
to go to PINS but the red tide and 3,000,000 dead fish on the beach changed our
destination. Matagorda beach was nice and clean and free of dead fish or red
tide. Most people we talked to there didn't even know about the red tide. We
told the bait lady at Rawlings and she was surprised. We sent up camp in the
colorado river part close to the new jetty they built. The weather was great but

we knew there was a cold front coming in Thursday. We cruised the beach a few
times and I was surprised there was a 5' deep cut right by the beach. There were

tons of whiting in this cut, you could catch them there all day long. We drove
over the dune area at 3 mile cut where you can drive back to east bay. It's an
old hurricane blow-out that has sealed over. Good place to fish, kayak and camp
back there. The beach in Matagorda is 22 miles long and dead ends into Caney
creek which runs by Sargent. Caney creek also goes out into the gulf. They built

a new jetty in Matagorda because the old one was too far apart and allowed the
cut to sand in which made it dangerous for boats coming and going through the
channel. Fishing was a little slow but I did catch a 17" flounder and a 27" red
fish. We also caught a lot of undersize fish we threw back. Thursday morning we
made coffee then broke camp and headed to Palacios to eat migas at Marcella's
and buy shrimp off the boats. After that we drove up to 521 Carl park on Tres
Palasios bay and fished and crabed for a while before heading home. We only
caught 3 blue crabs but with a fish filet they will work just fine. When we got
back to Austin the temp had droped about 25 degrees. Hello cold front.
