Has anyone put a battery operated trolling motor on a yak? If so can you post a picture pf how you mounted the motor and the battery. I am planning a winter project.

Like Steve said, you have to register it if you do that. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

I have a trolling motor on my Native Magic, build my own motor mount and very simple to attach because of the magic configuration. Registration was not a problem. Now getting back once the wind pick up is a lot easier.

I have seen Boricua's set up and seen it in action many times.
That's the way to go, also some other guys who run the river use a similar set up.
Boricua can really move out with the motor, and wind is no problem |

This might give you some ideas....
http://bassyaks.com/
I have seen these in operation and it is pretty cool but it took the guys an hour to rig up and they went to paddles 200 yds from their launch when they got to shallow on the flats. In my Tarpon160, I would have already been 3-4 miles from the launch in that amount of time. |

Homer, send me an email address so I can send you some pictures. I do not know how to load them on this site. I have had 3 different kayaks with trolling motors mounted.

BB | I don't think you can upload pics from your hard drive, you need to put them on a photo hosting site like photobucket or picasa and link to them there.
I never tried here, testing...

I investigate this a while back when I was looking at buying a cobra triple. Still plan on doing it someday when I have more time and can make enough trips down to the coast to justify it.
This is one way. Looks a little overkill to me. I would just bolt a piece of aluminum angle iron to the top of the crate with enough sticking out to put the motor on, and strap down the crate on the four corners with heavy duty rubber straps.

Lots of rigging instructions on above site. you can also order specialized kayak parts, etc. |

Lots of options out there for putting trolling motors on yaks. While it does not take an "hour" to get it ready for launching, it can be a pain. Advantages include getting to your fishing holes in the wind, easier trolling/drifting and hands free fishing depending on your rig. If you do not want to buy a "motor-ready" new yak, go to Texas Kayak Fisherman and search the threads. Lots of guys over on that site have rigged/built/modified their own. A few guys on this forum have the BassYaks and they are nice but can be pricey. Do a search on "Quietman's Kayak" and he has pics that show a very inexpensive homemade motor setup that he built for his Cobra Fish N Dive.
The bigger your kayak, the more suitable for the added weight of battery. Trolling motor itself is not all that heavy but the battery can be up to 60lbs. or so of added weight. Registration with TPWD is no big deal and the fee is not all that expensive...something like $32 for a couple of years or thereabouts.
Good luck! _________________ Mike |
