| So ive always been a fan of Penn, Mostly the spinning original SS series. Ever since that line went down the drain they have been a POS. We take care of our reels and i have 5 440's out of commission all pretty much brand new. We have a couple shimanos that held up in the surf the last 2 years after heavy use and surprisngly they are still running strong. We just picked up 5 more because of that. Still have my 8500SS and 7500SS running like a champ after years of use! Unless i come across another SS series im now a Shimano fan. |

i like shimano the tyrnos series are awesome. but for spinning reels i love my fin nor off shores they are built really tough and have lasted a long time

Had a handle break on 1, the bail on another and several lock up with little to no use. I baby my reel and use it only on the pier and boat and it still locked up after a couple uses. And yes i rinse mine every time i use them. We have a couple shimanos that were used primarily in the surf that took several waves that are still running strong after 2 years. Our Bigger SS reels have been running strong for around 10 years and are only used in the surf. I guess like most things they just dont make them like they used to |

i prefer the old penns, the 750ss is my favorite.
i never tried the 7500ss or the ssm, i just keep an eye out on ebay and at places that sell used tackle for when the originals show up. |

| Bummer man, my 440 is 3 years in and still going strong, but I agree they sure don't make them like the old SS series. I have three different sizes of the old ones, all >8 years old, feel just like they did when I got them. You can still find some on ebay, but they go quick! |

I believe you can have problems with any reel. He who shall not be mentioned , i bought my first Fin-Nor (sportfisher) and i am very impressed with it. I still have a lot of confidence in my Penn reels but there is a lot of good equipment out there I have 4 shimano's and they are made well but i wish we could have more equipment made in the good ole U.S.A.

If you and millions of others didn't mind paying 2-3 times the price for the same or worse quality, YOU COULD find more equipment made in the "Good ole U.S.A.
Sad but oh so true. Companies are in business first and foremost to make a profit, something that the "Occupy Wall Street" morons either never learned or had washed from their collective minds by their teachers/proffesors!

Actually, yes. On the same note, that's also why last year when my Nissan Frontier was totaled I bought a Toyota Tacoma: Better resale value because of the quality built into the product!!!! BUT, my last reel purchase was a Quantum Cabo 60 that I've talked about before on here. GREAT PRODUCT, and if you go to sights like Bass Pro and read the reviews of all the reels, you'll see that Shimano or Penn have as many or more less than favorable reviews as Quantum.
Who knows? Everybody gets a lemon now and then, but my next reel purchase will also be a Quantum Cabo of smaller size, some time in the future. The drag must be felt to be believed!!!!!!

I had my two favorite Penn spinners (SS) in a 2000 and 4000 size series stolen a couple of years ago and replaced them with newer Penns. I had the old ones for 6 ot 8 years of moderate use and they worked great. Not as smooth as my Shimanos but they never failed me. I have told many people through the years that if you want a longer lasting product, buy Penn. The new ones have not been such a plesant experience. The smaller one (2000) froze up after only 2 trips to saltwater and that was with my normal freshwater wash and spray down with WD-40. I was able to get it working by taking it apart and spraying with Corosion X inside, but they are not as smooth. I am very unhappy with them and will buy Shimanos from now on.
