|
|
What is y'all's choice of bait for kingfish when slide rigging here on the Gulf coast? I've been using what they call Atlantic Bumpers because they are easy to be had using sabikis and they stay alive a long time.
Thanks for all your replies. _________________ Cudakilla.com

my favorite choices are first blue runner( they live a long time), then watermelon shad most of my bites lately have been on small (5inch)watermelons i like the thread fin pilchard?its the big watermelon with a strange thin elongated dorsal fin and spots, big pinfish(piggy perch) are good bait too as well as bluefish and small ladyfish will work baby jack cravelle work as well
good luck =)

He who shall not be mentioned. Thanks for the suggestions. I always enjoy reading your posts. They are very informative. I just had not had much luck since I started slide rigging and was wondering if it was the bait I was using. The only hit I got was on a small blue runner and I think it was a large smack that chomped it. I have been using the bumpers and have seen a few passes and a few slashes mostly from smacks.
BTW..I have a Thai neighbour that loves to fry up those larger bumpers and another friend told me they sell for $6.99lb at the Asian market.

Everyone has thier preferences.....Here is my point of view on this subject.
My first choice if available is mid size to large Blue Fish, they are hard to keep alive sometimes but a wonderful bait for kingfish....I watched many kings this year slash at my bluerunner on one slide and miss it and go straight for the Blue fish on the other 15ft away. Blue fish seem like candy to them. Menhaden are the best when they are in. Thats the main bait the kings feed on. Blue Runners are the next with Watermelon follwing close behind like He who shall not be mentioned said. But with that said i have seen everyone on the end have blue runners on thier slides and i have ran a pin perch and had the only two kings for the day on perch back to back. All depends on what the kings are feeding on that day. They go back and forth on whats on thier menu lol. I have seen kings eat the bumper shad but its not a very prodominant bait for them. Watermelons are a good all around bait when nothing else is available. hope this is helpful

i saw a 45 inch king caught on the bumper shad(sh*t shad lol) try and cut one in half they are tough. my favorite baits period for any fishing in texas are menhaden and ribbonfish live, dead, cutbait really doesnt matter almost every fish eats them. fish 10 inch menhaden in the bay cut them in half and they will put out a chum slick clear across the bay drawing fish from far away my biggest red ate a whole menhaden _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

Never had much luck on bumpers. The only time I would ever put one on for bait now is if I could not catch anything else to use. They have a nick name...sh!t shad, because they are not good for sh!t.
Kingfish Slide Baits in order of preference - Blue Runner, Watermelon or threadfin shad, mullet
Tarpon Slide Baits - All the same baits work on tarpon but I would also throw Pinfish and Butter Perch on this list.
I've never used a skipjack or bluefish on a slide but they should work pretty well too. I would guess that a skipjack would not live too long though. |

Gosh..with a nick like kingkilla, the advice weights heavy! LOL!! poo poo shad!! That's funny. I had no idea! Will try the other bait options the next time. Thanks for the awesome tips. I've caught tons of kings offshore and my bait of choice there is double hooked ribbon fish with a small pink skirt. Just recently made the transition to fishing for them on the pier. Seems they are a little more fussy there. Do you guys reckon a dead ribbon will work on a slide rig? What about mullet? I've seen big kings tear into horse mullet before on the pier.
On a different note..is the season for them on the pier winding down? How late can you still get them? I know the smacks and pomps run big later in the year. _________________ Cudakilla.com

use the ribbonfish on a float they will pick it up live or dead i have had little luck with mullet and only use it when nothing else is around. there is only a month or so left for kings from land so fish hard... sad about the red tide chasing them offshore _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

1: Bluefish ( I preffer the larger ones 1.5-3 Lbs. if I can get them).
2:Big Threadfin
3:Blue Runner
4:Pinfish( The bigger the better)
5:Skipjack
6:Watermelon Shad
7:Spot
I personally like a big bait, seen a 70# king caught on a 3# bluefish from a pier in Carolina. We have seen some monster kings on BHP this year , But haven't put it on the scales yet. Determination shall prevale. |

X2X2 on Carolina kinger's Line up!
I have seen a few monster's on Bob Hall ranging to around 6ft long and they just cruise by my blue runner like its a sh!t shad. If i would have had a big bait ex. Blue fish or skipjack im sure he would have took!
By gosh Caroliner we shall get one sooner or later.
But I am worried that the red tide is going to end Kingfish season this year or not. Might have to rollover to next season !
If it is over...we still had one hell of a season taking the most kings off bob hall this year!
I think im gonna be one or two shy of hitting 30 kings this season. I should have fished more during those weeks of runs! _________________ D. Askew |

It may be over, have to try and see.
I'll be there tomorrow and Sunday if the Red Tide don't run me off.
I left some money out of my walley so I would have room to put $60.00 HaHa. |
