After you get the fish to the boat and remove the hook and put it on a stringer or some type of line. Lay the fish on its side and lift up the pectoral fin. Under the fin you will find a soft spot. Take your finger (pointing) and push it into the fish at the soft spot. Turn the fish over and do the same to the other side, then tie off the stringer or line you have the fish attached to and put the fish in the water. You'll see a lot of blood so I wouldn't recommend you don't put it in the ice chest. Let the fish bleed out in the water, usually takes 5 minutes or so after put it on ice.
Bleeding a fish out like this will not take all the bloodline out of the fish but it will take a lot out and reduce the strong taste.

Never tried it. I don't doubt it works, but out of curiosity, anyone know what, physiologically, is going on there? An artery and/or vein there or something?
I have heard that putting the fish on ice has the effect of freezing the fish to death such that the blood is drawn from the meat into the internal organs (which you usually throw away) in order to preserve heat. Not sure if this is true, as I am no ickyologist. |

Have to try that. Plus the blood in water will attract more fish! _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

I got the live performance from Capt. Mike. You really need to get the pointed finger in and down toward the tail. _________________

I wonder if this is why I don't like Redfish very much. Not "rancid" or...*bad*, but yeah, too fishy (for me). |

I do the "straight in the ice chest" thingy myself. As Rawlboy alluded to, the physiological effects of hypothermia draw blood out of the muscle and into the internal organs to prolong life as long as possible. Note that I'm NOT saying that bleeding doesn't work well or even better, just saying that ice works great and is easy. _________________ Dave
