Had a request to post the link to David's column yesterday because of references to sand accumulating in Packery Channel:

Today there's a long forum piece by Brooks Peterson. Pertinent excerpts appear above the LTTEs below. Wonder if it was him and not others that have been anonymously applying the lipstick to the pig in the editorial columns?
About the best that can be said about John Vaughn's stale-issued LTTE is that at least he had the courage to sign it. Do you suppose he's among those fat cats John Hablinski's LTTE associates with promoting the beach driving ban to make personal bucks?

Readers have spoken, and written, copiously

No doubt, the key to this eruption was the two-way referendum on beach access and on a requirement for referenda on any future efforts to restrict vehicular activity on Padre Island beaches. This hit a lot of people where they live. To their credit, they did not just mope in the La-Z-Boy. No indeed. They sat down at their computers or writing desks and unburdened themselves of their sentiments. Some decried the very idea of any curbs on beach access; others, just as passionately, expressed astonishment and dismay at the opposition, warning that it could throttle the community's growth and frighten off investors in perpetuity.
----
Whether your cause was mine or not, whether our meditations inspired or infuriated you, I salute you. Party on, so to speak.

Pay attention
If you had any doubt about which way you should vote in the election concerning beach access, then the list of donors to the two sides should settle the question. On the side fighting to keep public access are regular citizens like you and me. On the side promoting the unprecedented giveaway are most of the City Council members and many members of the big-moneyed establishment. That should tell you something right there.
Those promoting the giveaway are quick to assure us that we will still have access and we will only have to hike one-fourth mile or so to get there.
Now, tell me, do you really believe the potential developer will want the unwashed multitudes cluttering up his beach? Of course not. Corpus Christi, pay attention. What they want you to give away in reality belongs to our posterity. They will not think well of us if we squander it.

Job creator
The same people keep opposing every issue that is presented that would help Corpus Christi grow economically. Then they pull in a few additional people who have passionate views on a particular issue. In this case, they pulled in the fishermen and surfers. Packery Channel was dug for everyone.
It is time we look at the greater benefits that Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend will derive from a vehicle-free 7,200 feet of beach.
Corpus Christi has accepted second-best long enough. The resort is what can bring us to the top. It will create entertainment for tourists as well as the locals. It will create many jobs and economic benefits for many of us.
It is time we looked at the many positives of this issue, rather than the one negative. It is time for Corpus Christi to go forward and grow for our children's sake. Vote "yes" on Amendment No. 1.
