| I got a report that ghost shrimp are small or nonexistent at area beaches. Has anyone else heard about this or maybe someone could offer and explanation. |

my new, altered scientific method;
1) is there a REAL problem?
2) WHO sez there's a problem?
3) what kind of credentials does the person who sez there's a problem have?
4) has this person looked for ghost shrimp in areas more than 20 feet away from where they parked their car one day last week?
sorry to be cynical, I've seen plenty of ghost shrimp this season all over the beaches. although Capt. Billy is right, historically their numbers are low the first couple miles of the seashore due to, um, well.....

I have not seen a problem. You can't use pumps on the National Seashore to get them since about 2009. There used to be quite a few harvested by the winter Texans on those first couple of miles but as I said it is illegal now on Padre Island National Seashore. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

| I'm not suggesting there is a problem fetus face. I'm just trying to help out an 81 year old winter Texan who likes to catch pompano. But you may be right in your assumption that he's not venturing far from his vehicle to look for them. |

Again with no biological studies citing lower numbers the Superintendent decided that they needed to ban digging ghost shrimp to save them for the migrating birds. To add insult to injury the seashore website uses my photo I took of an egg-laden female as an example of the species.
Children learn so much biology and have loads of fun doing that. It is such a shame. The previous head ranger Dede Mladucky found an obscure rule that says it is illegal to dig bait in a National Park. That makes sense at Yellowstone if you have someone punching a thousand holes and not burying them if they are digging for angle worms but not at the National Seashore where each hole is immediately filled with each passing wave. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

easy there, sikes. but a better one would have been Pork Face, LOL. always day-dreamed of getting a ticket from a cop and saying "snap it up pork-face, I don't have all day" and see what his reaction would be.
since you posted this last week, I took a look at the beach when I was down there this weekend. it looks like the ghost shrimp have moved lower down the beach in response to the large variation in tidal amplitude we've had recently. the short of the story is that they will be hard to see and get at during high tide, but plentiful during low tide.
better explanation?
