I came across a used poling platform that fits perfect on my 21' Skout. I probably won't be poling from it but it will get a lot of use as a casting deck. It looks like it was made for the boat so I couldn't pass up the deal. It mounts on the transom and the deck like a lot of them do. I was thinking the best thing was to use some round aluminum plates about 4' or so on the inside of the transom/deck for backing and of course stainless hardware. Any suggestions? I need to get it mounted fairly soon. My wife volunteered me to captain her and 3 of her freinds for the babes on baffin tournament using artificials. I will porobably need something to hide under Shocked

I'd at least use 5200 on the holes. To do it right, you'd locate the holes, overdrill the hole size, fill with thickened epoxy then drill to actual bolt size. You could then use the backing plates. This way no water ever has a chance to get to anything.

I have never had ANYTHING get past 5200! But the epoxy idea is interesting.

We always just use stainless 1/4 x20 bolts with washers and 5200. No need for backing plates unless it's doubling as a tow point for skiers.

Thanks guys. The one thing about my Dargel is there is no tow point. The cleats have nothing behind them and i would not trust them to do anything but tie off my boat. I have needed one a couple of times trying to pull guys out of the sahllows who thought they were in an air boat?? I was planning on having John build my tower but just could not past this deal up.

I concur with UncleD's recommendation. 5200 is about as good as it gets for sealants. The drill-fill-drill method is extra work but the fix is permanent. I like the idea of backer plates. Think of how often people will grab the platform to climb it, pull themselves up, or just lean on it. Over time all that stress adds up. The backer plates will help distribute the load.

Just my thoughts.

If you don't want to use a back plate at least use Fender washers these are flatwashers with a larger outside diameter, they are available in T304 S/S and come in two outside diameters 1 1/2" or 1 1/4" O.D.'s

Also a little advise on the bolting, stainless steel can gauld when you assemble the nut and bolt. I recommend you use a T316 s/s bolt and a
T304 s/s nylon insert locknut. You might also want to use some thread lubricant. Will make the job alot easeier.
