|

Oz, or anyone else who have fished in the Florida Keys for Tarpon or any other game fish (e.g., bone fish) else besides Sharks, lol....
Where can I go wade fishing from Key Largo to Key West without hiring a fishing guide? (I don't have that kind of dough!)
Taking a road trip starting Sat.
Thanks! _________________ Live to Fish... Fish to Live

| I dont wade fish so I cannot be of much help. But I can highly recommend some type of thick boot or shoe due to the high number of sea urchans and sting rays down there! Good luck. |

dood, there's a few places you can drive up to and catch tarpon. Channel 2 just south of Islamorada, channel 5 around Indian key, and then the base of the 7 mile bridge, there's Boca Chica park at summerland key, and then there's several bridges just north of key west where we got into some good tarpon after dark last year.
all standing on a bridge or concrete. throw smaller lures than you would think.

| there are resident tarpon in the keys but the tarpon migration is usually through the keys by may/june. For tarpon, I would probably park and fish near one of the bridges. Use crab or better yet live mullet under a lemon rig or similar. Bonefishing this time of year is usually real early morning and too hot on the flats by about 9am typically. You could fish the edges of inlets later in the day freelining shrimp and crab and may hook a bone that way. Wadefishing will be tough, the gulf side is muddy and the atlantic side is mixed coral, grass and mud. Not a great wadefishing location although i'm sure you could find some places to get in. I'm sure others will chime in with more info. Good luck |

Good info, thanks.
I use nothing but lures.
Wt. Line?
I'll be taking 20 lb. I normally fish with 8 lb. _________________ Live to Fish... Fish to Live

Yes, I have fished there before - Robbies Marina at Islamorada is great - you can actually feed the Tarpon in the boat slips, several guides can take you out. - I recomed this area to Key West or ANY place else, it's #1 in the world for flatt fish...... well maybe the Bluff is better
Oh - the mom & pop sea food places - WOW...WOW and the key lime pie - MMmmmmmm
I went around Key West - didn't really appeal to me for wading,
My guide used shrimp hooked under the throst through the head with a small lead jig head we got Mangrove Snapper, Reds and Barracuda- for tarpon??????
Along the road you can wade fish - be careful there are alot of sharks - saw 2 (nurse though) before i was going to get in and just decided to fish close to shore. places where there are bridges are good - some of them get manhadden and a chum bag to attract the mangrove snapper. _________________ Happy Hook'n

Sounds like a great road trip. Have a good safe one. I'm surprized you didn't ask where should I hang out after I'm done fishing for the day? _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Robbies marina is awesome. They have several guides to choose from and you can even sometimes split a trip with other people to knock the price down. My wife and i went out with captain Eric. he was fantastic. we caught more mahi than we knew what to do with also several sail fish that made it a trip of a life time. Also dont forget to eat at the tarpon inn for break fast. Everything there is made fresh to order and is really good. One more place that most of the locals will tell you about is loraliis, it is a seafood restraunt that sits on the ocean and you eat on the beach in cabanna huts and it is very cheap and very good!!! _________________ "My Secret Spot..." |

| You dont need to go all the way to the keys to have great fishing. I grew up on the space coast and fished the Indian(mosquito Lagoon)river and banana river. World class red fishing here along with monster snook. You could also fish the sebastian inlet area. If you are taking a road trip I highly advise you try these areas. Do a search on the web and you'll see what I am talking about. I moved here years ago and I still go back every year for vacation. If you must go to the keys make sure to stop and fish Bahia honda state park area. I have caught some nice rooster fish here. damn I miss Florida. |

Great feeds! I had planned on Bahia Honda for sure. I use to go to KWF at least twice a year a long time ago, but I had never fished there. I took up fishing in Corpus. : ) _________________ Live to Fish... Fish to Live
