I plan to buy a boat by fall. I have owned a boat most of my life, but I have no experience in salt water, so shopping has been an education. I would like to find a boat that would work for the bay as well as the Gulf if there is such a boat. I have no desire to go any farther off the coast than the oil rigs. I would like a boat that I could anchor at the end of the ship channel at the Aransas ship channel and fish for whatever. I know a lot of big sharks over the years have come out of where the channel enters into the Gulf. However after seeing the size of the waves generated by the oil tankers I question if it would be wise to anchor a 16 or a 18 ft boat. So my question, are the waves from the ships big enough to swamp a 16 or a 18 ft boat. I am thinking of a V hull and just anchor it so the V hull would aim into waves generated would slice the waves, or are the waves deep enough to swamp a boat? Also the same question is what if the wave were to hit a boat from the side, is it likely to swamp the boat or even turn it over. It looks like I may have to buy 2 boats, one that runs shallow for the bay and a larger boat for the gulf.

Im planing on getting a boat also and have done alot of research on this shore/shallow boat, and Ive come to the conclusion there isnt one. I wouldnt be happy with a bout that couldnt draft in 10" of skinny water and go to the rigs on any given day not jus dead calm days. And as far as I know there isnt one. Your lucky to be able to get 2 boats if I had the money Id get a Haynie and SeeVee both used and under 100k but you would have a couple of the best.IMO

2200 pathfinder... I have been in rough 4-6 foot seas and dipped the bow every few minutes and I have ran the flats they are great boats. There might be a better option but that is a good option for sure!

Homer, welcome to the board!!
Following seas whatever route you go.
The seas tend to lay down in late July-August, assuming we have this everlasting High remaining above us. So pick your battles!! _________________

Balztowal I don't have a price range. There are a lot of good used boats under $10,000. I am fortunate to be blessed with a mechanical mind and I take care of all my repairs on cars, boats, houses or whatever breaks down, so I feel safe in buying a used boat that has a few things broken down and fixing them myself. I just have to be careful of the cost of parts.
Something else I have to be careful of and that is the weight of the boat. The pickup I have is only rated for 2,000 pounds of towing weight. With a transmission cooler i feel safe in buying a boat with a single axle.
My main question is how is a boat going to handle the waves stirred up by the oil barges.
I may be forced to get a boat that will not sink, keep everything tied down and just let the waves swamp over the boat.
Sure looking forward to this fall when I will buy one.
In the meantime I have an inflatable zodiac and that will work great for the bays. It won't sink, but I think it would be very suspectable to rolling if hit from the side by a big wave. The thought of a gas tank or a battery hitting me in a rollover is not a good option, so I am keeping it in smoother waters.
Gunbuyer I will keep the pathfinder as an option.
If someone else has a boat that is good for the bays and gulf, I will definitely listen to your suggestion.
I will also spend some time at the lauches and question people about their opinion when they are lauching their boat. Heck even some of them will probably invite me to ride along and go fishing. |

I'll sell you my 21 outrage in the fall for 11,000 OBO!!!! It is not a bay boat and is a tandem trailer and weighs something like 4000lbs. But a great great boat and a great price too!

I wouldn't be afraid of taking a Haynie Bigfoot out in the gulf. It will drift in 10" of water as well. Just can't get on top in that shallow off water. But it will run in skinny water...Adios

If you can afford it, that boat would be a Shallow Sport Latitude 27!

Rawlbay since I only live about 4 miles from the boat launch in the Nueces River I plan to spend most of the winter months in the Nueces Bay. I have not been on the water in a boat, but from looking at the color of the water on the satellite shots it looks like I will be running some very shallow water.

Be careful in Nueces bay. There are plenty of oyster reefs to wreck your lower unit and then some. Get familar with Nueces before you start running around wide open or you may get in some trouble. I would look into El Pescador or the Gulf Coast that is similar. Tran makes one as well.

Like riverrat said, if you can swing it, go for the shallow sport Latitude 27. Just watching the clips on YouTube, it looks pretty awsome. We've taken our 24' cajun out offshore and run all over nueces bay and Baffin. We go out port A and packery when it not to bad. Just got a Haynie Z21 and want to take it offshore and see how it does. Hopes this helps out some.
