|

I'm a fly fisherman from Colorado. Came out to Corpus last week to visit some friends. I brought an 8wt with me and did some DIY fly fishing (guides are just too expensive, plus I like the adventure in doing it yourself). I picked up some deceivers in several different colors, and some gotchas. The white and red colored deceivers and white Gotcha worked the best for me.
I caught a Ladyfish and a ton of Pinfish in Packery Channel. Both seem to be fun fish to catch, especially the Ladyfish - they like to jump. Caught a Redfish too, but it was small. Caught a crab too - deliberately. That was neat.
I had planned to fish Port Aranasas one day too, but the weather was horrible windy and the water over there was full of jellyfish when we went out there, so we skipped that day.
Next time I come I hope to get on some bigger redfish out in the flats. Might have to rent a Kayak. You all have a lot of fun fishing down there, can't wait to back and give it another go.

Welcome to the board. Glad you had some fun on the fly. Should have hit deadmans.
I'll be up in the Crede area in a few weeks for some fly fun. |

There's some great fishing near Creede in both the Rio Grande and the South Fork. Plus it is only a couple hours drive to some of the best stretches of the Arkansas by Salida and Buenavista, and some great fishing on the Conejos done by Mogote.
You can keep an eye on conditions here:

Here's some other useful info:

Good luck! |

Thanks for the report. My wife got a huge skipjack the other day and enjoyed the fight.

I'm happy to share info/tips/spots to folks coming into my area for a visit from out of town. If I can help someone have a great day or two on the river while they are visiting from out of state, then i'm happy to do so. So feel free to shoot me a PM if you need some info on Colorado fishing, i'll give you whatever help I can.
I plan to make more trips to Corpus in the future since we have some good friends that live there now, so the more I can learn from you all, the better my trips will be. Fly fishing there is a lot different then what I am used to here, but it was a lot of fun. Catching a monster Texas redfish out in the flats is on my fly fishing bucket list, so you better believe that I plan to come back and give it a go again.
I was wondering if you all could post pics of some of the flys you like to use (either pics or names of patterns). I want to start tying some of these patterns now so I can be ready for my next trip down there. I'm looking at maybe Oct. |

| That's perfect, thanks. Some of those look really challenging to tie. Should be fun. Probably start working on some clousers first. When I get some tied, I'll post up pics so you all can inspect them to see if you think they are worthy or your waters. |

| Thanks for the info, Silver. Last year I fished, and hiked, the Lake city area. I think this year I will also hit Los Pinos and Platoro reservoir. I find fishing the rivers of CO and NM to be a lot more challenging than the salt. |

I've never fished Platoro, but I have fished the Conejos, which comes out of Platoro. Very good fishing (browns mostly), especially in the section called the Meadows that isn't too far down from Platoro, and lower in another section called the Pinnacles. Fishing the Pinnacles is like fishing on another planet - really interesting canyon pillars.
If you are coming in just a few weeks, the waters could be high, fast, and muddy because the spring snow run-off might still be going on. Dry fly action will be slow because of that, so plan to nymph a lot. I recommend black and golden stone flys, and bead head San Juan worms (I like pink and tan combo San Juans myself).
Check these guys out for info. I've visted them a few times and they have always been super helpful. I even stayed in their cabins one time.

There's even a link to a a webcam on the river, though I've not yet figured out what part of the river that is on. I'm sure they can tell you about Platoro too if you don't make it down onto the river below the dam.
I'm planning 3-4 day hike in trip to Elk Creek this year myself, which is a feeder to the Conjeos. Hope to cover about 10 miles of river. That whole San Juan wilderness area is really great. |

My wife and I really love it up there. We spend the summers in Ojo Caliente, NM and spend a lot of time on the rivers and lakes in Northern NM and southern CO.
Snowfall in NM has been almost record breaking low this year. Might lead to extreme fire dangers as well as low river conditions. |
