|

I was playing with Google Earth and noticed something I have not seen before in the Gulf of Mexico. Straight east of Bird Island Basin in 45 feet of water there is a Productin Platform that is located dead in the center of circle of what appears to be a different colored bottom structure. The near shore color change is 43 feet deep, the center is 45 feet and the east edge is 49 feet deep. Very near the circle of color change is a "blurb" that said "The value of oyster reefs". Have any of you boaters and or kayackers noticed a change in the bottom structer around this platform?
Uncle D, I know you have flowen over this area many times. have you seen the color change around the platform? _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |

The platform is there and is a very clear shot complete with its shadow. It is the first one I have seen on Google earth in the gulf. The imagery date was Jan. 1 1009. Check it out. _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |

May not be there now, but as per google earth it was there on 01-01- 2009. Have you checked google earth latley? Besides that the main thing that got my atention was the color change and the caption reading "The value of oyster reefs" near the color change. _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |

There are a number of nearshore platforms that you can see with Google Earth, but for the most part, it's a resolution issue within the "ocean" views. Off of Cameron and Grande Isle, LA, you can see a number of platforms that all have that same "halo effect" around them. It's not a true representation of the water, so take it with a grain of salt.
Punch in 29 30'29.54" N 92 48'12.66" W and it takes you to a series of platforms SE of Grande Chenier, but the really cool part is the outstanding rip line that goes right by the platform. Bet there were some mahi caught that day!!!
The link to the "value of oyster reefs" is just be a mis-place tag within Google Oceans, because the work it is describing takes place within the margin of Corpus Christi Bay (I think). |

I don't recall that rig being out there now. I was that way in early Jan. and besides, you can't see that deep in the gulf or at least I never have. Sometimes lucky to see the third sand bar. Maybe in the Caribbean one can see that deep.
The pic was taken 5-28-09' I don't know why that "blurb" is even there. No oysters I've ever seen in the gulf. Only in the bays. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Still though might be a good place to fish. Probably junk in the water where that rig was, well head, whatever.
Edit: CS type's faster than I do. |
