Just noticed they put up some big timbers around the bank of Homeland Security Cameras on P.I.N.S.

Those went up a few weeks ago. I always make sure and give the cameras a bit cheesy smile when I go through.
They've also paved a walking trail just past the guard shack. Looks a bit out of place to me.

I always give the cameras a great big one finger salute when I go by.

I know...probably a poor attitude, but something about seeing those cameras just cheeses me off a bit.

dumb questions but what are the cameras for? for drug smugglers? Seems like a pretty big expense when probably 95% of the people are going onto the park to fish or camp

Homeland security now requires them at all national parks bordering Mexico (to "monitor" smuggling activity, illegals, etc.).

The feds like to waste taxpayer money where it can be SEEN. Using any form of covert surveillance would defeat the whole purpose............... Evil or Very Mad Rolling Eyes Embarassed

This makes the same amount of sense as shaking down little kids and old ladies at the airport while letting young, middle eastern men walk on by without a second look!!! Question

I think they need twice that many cameras. Very Happy Being a federal installation maybe they have figured out that when the "big wheels" come to visit for an inspection that this will awe them. Big wheels like bells and whistles and lot of pretty lights. Very Happy

Is Port Mansfield in Mexico?

Can't wait til they take em out again. That barrier is not going to be strong enough to stop some of these trucks with big bumpers.

That's what I was thinking. PINS doesn't border Mexico.

Sorry but there will not be much of any truck left if they hit this.
it is built very strong. but if someone does hit it they will be hauled off in a meat wagon. the last guy that hit it was hauled off and it was not close as strong.

According to a friend of mine who works for the local US Customs, there is a large amount of drug smuggling and illegal trafficking that goes thru the park.
