I set out some crab traps on my back dock last night and checked them this morning. I had no idea that there were stone crabs in the back dock. Don't you know I'm going to buy some more crab traps. Thanks Tyler for recommending that I try for crabs in the canal.

As I would find out later, you can only take the right claw. For bait I used the fish heads and backbones of the fish I caught in the last 3 days.

Not being a stickler, but you can't use the remains of game fish (trout, reds, etc) for crab bait. It's considered using game fish for bait even if it is just the remains.

Preferably, BEFORE breaking them! Shocked

There could be some serious bad things happen by doing differently..........

If you get caught in your own backyard then your having really bad luck!!!

Taking off only one claw is a very legal, nice, and sportsman like thing to do! I used to catch them all the time on the west coast of FL. It was standard to take only one claw but I must say the commercial guy I was with was tearing both off. He made a living at it. Not saying what he was doing was right. Actually, I think that would be a very unfortunate way to die!

Pulled my dock light up the yesterday to get it further into the canal. Had to scrape a schit ton of barnacles off the light and cord. Among the barnacles were a bunch of baby stone crabs.

Them canals are full of life. Pretty amazing scenery sometimes.

Hightide, how big are the openings on your trap? Pinfish rape my crabtrap and my pinfish traps get ignored. Seems all I can catch in my canal are drum and specks.
