|
|
I'm new to saltwater fishing (and was never really good at freshwater for that matter). So, be patient with a stupid question.
According to several sources that I've read, the shock leader line weight should be calculated by taking the tackle weight in ounces, multiply by 10, then converting to pounds. So if I'm fishing 10 ounces of lure (or bait), then 100 ounces converted to pounds is around 7 lbs. Doesn't make since if I'm fishing 15 or 20 lbs main line....
What am I missing?
Thanks. |

| you want to change to pounds, not convert. in your case you would use a 100lbs test minimum shock leader. the length of the leader should be 2x the length of your pole plus at least 5 wraps on the real. In my case, I would go 125 or 150 lbs test shock leader, because even using that formula, i have sent many a bait sailing, but i am still very green at distance casting. |

One thing to remember is that the lighter the line the farther the cast.If you just fishing for redfish, whiting, trout or drum you don't need anything
heavier than 20# line and 50# shock leader. I use 17# line and 40# shock leader.I have a 15' rod and I put on 36' of shock leader. Hope this helps.Try sufix line you'll love it. |

Ok. That makes a lot more since. Thanks for the replies.
My original plan was to go with Power Pro line in the 50 lbs range (for the smaller diameter to achieve longer casts) for the main line. In doing so, I can probably get by with using a 50 lbs mono shock leader. I am assuming that it would be best to use mono as I understand Power Pro to not hold nots well and to get the diameter for abrasion resistance.
Does that sound right? I have a 10' rod. So I'll be using about 26' feet of shock leader. Now I just have to learn to cast!!! Thanks again for the help.
Plan to be down on PINS around mid-October. Can't wait. Hope to get to meet some of you. |

I've brought in a 40in. drum on 17# sufix tri-taninum with a 40# sufix superior shock leader on a Okuma Axeon reel. The Axeon has a super smooth drag system. I brought in a 30in. red on a 7ft. rod with 12#sufix
tri-taninum.
