Is it necessary to have a "saltwater" trolling motor, or will a fresh water motor be ok so long as it is rensed off at the and of the day. I will only bee fishing saltwater 5-6 times a year and it's alot easier to find a freshwater motor out in West Tex.

You can go with a freshwater motor just fine. I would skip the foot control
go with the hand control and put a sacrifical anode on it.

I don't know the answer to that but can tell you that my El Cheapo OMC trolling motor held up just fine to salt water. What didn't was the foot control cable, along with my main motor steering cable!!! Embarassed

Stop by Snooker Ed's place and have a look at his freshwater trolling motor and what saltwater will do to them.

I was planning on using a sacrificial anode on it. Thanks

There is a reason for salt water series motors. However 3-4 times a year and a good rinse you should be fine. Very Happy

If you check out the Minn Kota website you'll find that the warranty on a freshwater model is voided if you put in the salt. Don't know about Motorguide.
