Headed out this am about 7:15, hoping to take advantage of the calm conditions the past few days. The access road to the south jetties is pretty chewed up right past the blacktop, so I turned around and headed over to the north jetties. A little better there, thanks to the "road" that they maintain.

Visibility was much less than I was hoping for, but I was determined to spear some fish. Headed to one of the spots I know well, about 50 yards from the end. All the fishing action was on the surf side, so I had the channel side to myself. MAYBE 5-6 foot viz at the surface, even less on the bottom. But the fish were thick!!! Got a limit of sheepshead (all 16-19") in about 15 minutes. Started scouting out for snapper, and I'm glad to report that there is no shortage of 8-12" fish! Very Happy

With the poor visibility, it was tough to get close up on the bigger ones, although I did spook a BEHEMOTH mangrove that could have easily gone 8 lbs. Left all the smallish ones for another day, and settled for the limit of sheepshead.

Another good thing to report is that the snook didn't take a beating from last winter or the red tide. For anyone wanting to catch some, head to the channel-side, 25 yards from the end, 10-15 yards from the rocks/waters edge. The bottom is <10 feet, and the monster snook are cruising just about everywhere! Shocked There are some BIG fish down there. 25-30"+ LOGS.

There was also an abundance of very small stinging nettle jellyfish, but surprisingly, I didn't get hit once. Out of the water with dinner and into the office before 9:30. Not a bad way to start the day.

Are you using a speargun or a power pole/Hawaiian sling setup?

Today's tides, from the Tide Chart that Tony Amos supplies.

The red arrow is approximately when I was there this morning.

The bottom "tide cycle" that I added shows the best time to hit the water at the jetties. From just before the high tide mark, to the falling arm before the mid-line. The water is not moving real fast during these times, and the majority of it is the clear"er" water, not from the bay.

48" JBL International speargun. Probably overkill for the jetties. A sling will just bounce right off the side of a sheepshead!!! Razz

Thanks, you da man!

When I'm down in Destin fishing I have often thought a spearfishing the west jetty. It's so long and treacherous to walk on that as often as not it's totally deserted for the most part. The normal vis down there is so good that you can stand on the end and sight fish for sheepies on the bottom, 20' down!!! When the tide is coming in it brings that clear water with it. About 30 minutes after the tides turns and heads out, the channel can get quite a bit more stained, but is still clear relative to Texas coastal waters

Thanks for the info.
Not trying to be a party pooper, but I thought it was illegal to swim/snorkel/dive in the channel.

It is. Rolling Eyes

It's also illegal to drive over the speed limit. Plus, it's illegal to drive in the far left-hand lane on the highway, because that lane is for passing only. And the "White Zone is for Loading and Unloading Only"......... Razz
