Got to water about 8, with some other yakkers and Team O folks.

First of all not much wind, water clarity good, and it was hot.
Gulp on 1/16oz jig head worked for me today, had some trout play with tops, but no takers. And tons of mullet everywhere.

Went out towards some islands after drifting first hole with no luck. Got to the islands and started drifting shallow. Then in some sand pockets I picked up the first red @ 21". Then a few cast later second red at 23", then several casts later black drum around 21".

Here's some pics.

great report chuck. Drum are all over the back side of mustang right now. There have been small schools of 7-10 fish (BIG ONES TOO) in my canal every morning, and I can't get them to take ANYTHING. I'll welcome any ideas.

They usually have a hard time turning down small pieces of shrimp or a small crab, but they're not dumb either........................ they can be pretty darn spooky and leader shy in the shallows.

The times that I've used the Gulp crabs they were ripped to shreds by pinfish. The legs were first to go of course but then they had the frenzy going and the rest doesn't last long!!! Rolling Eyes

fishbites sound like a good idea. I did the gulp crabs, gulp shrimp, live shrimp, dead shrimp, gold spoon, DOA and cut bait, all right in their facinity. They didn't even investigate any of those. I think one might have actually winked at me just out of spite.

Im pretty much just accepting that they aren't in the canal to feed, but maybe just to find some deep water every now and then to cool off. Either way, good luck chuck, and let us know if you nail em.

luke i had the same problem @south padre there were 20-25+ in trout crusing the top of the water under the lights at the condo and they would not take a live shrimp thrown 2 feet infront of them ... i asked a guide the next day he said to get a size 10 single hook and get the small shrimp about 1-2 inches... it worked for me

That's what I meant by "small".............................. sometimes just a small bite is all they are interested in, and small bait SHOULD mean equally small hooks/terminal tackle and fluoro leader, especially in the clear water.

This combo will also result in more mangrove snapper taking your offering when fishing for them! Cool
