Does anyone fishes for flounder?

I am not talking about going out and gigging them but using conventional fishing gear ie. line, hooks, and sinker. I have not seen any reports pertaining to this fishery. Can anyone provide me with some pointers and locations to start with?

bumb a gulp along the edge of any major channel or inlet..gulp swimming mullet rigged in tandom are lethal. Have alot of patience and keep moving. Fish an area with a sand edge and not a mud edge. Or use the current to drift bait on the bottom on an edge.. shrimp / mud minnow or mullet are key.. But I think gulp work better..

90% of the rod and reel flounder I have caught have been on accident.. I was targeting something else but a flounder is always welcome.. G luck

Ditto what robul said but most importantly know your area. Tidal flow direction helps out.

I agree with Robul. Mostly I catch flounder on accident, but there are some places while wading that get a little extra attention. Drop off's are key for me. Places where a grass flat ends at deeper water. Fish those lines slowly and close to the bottom.

Flounder tend to stack up on points, so hit those areas especially hard.

I am planning to fish CC this weekend. Can anyone direct me to an area that may have a good population of flounder? I just moved in from upstate NY and most of my summer flounder fishing was conducted in Long Island Sound, NY. Some of the advise that I have received mimics the way we also fish for them at the L.I. Sound. Only difference is that I was able to catch between 15-20 a day but was able to keep maybe one or two due to the high slot size, which usualy is 21 1/2". Last year I caught two flounders and it was like everyone else a surprise catch. This year I would like to target them as to compare the differences and similarities of this fishery. Thanks, to all that have provided me with a starting point...

Petrieheil, Im from LI too bud, I know the flounder (aka Fluke) fishery up there all to well, and the horendous management of it as well. You won't find any 21.5 inch minimums down here, but then again in from my limited experience down here, its uncommon that you will catch 20 flatties in any given day either (unless you REALLY nail the timing and find a concentration, which would be awesome). They arent as common here, atleast not for most of the year, as they are in NY, likely due to the fact that here in Corpus we are not in the heart of their home range, (combined with a bit of overfishing).

While most guys drift around for fluke in the LI sound, usually using bucktails, or dragging squid or live bait on the bottom, that general drifting style is more difficult here due to MUCH less tidal movement. That is one of the reasons why everyone is telling you to target an area near a pass or channel, because thats typically where the tidal movement will be greatest, and where they will feed, or where they are migrating in/out of.

So as for the presentation of the bait, yeah, its almost the same as when you target NY flounder (the sister species to the one in the gulf), but how you actually go about finding concentrations, its a little different. I havent decided whether Id rather catch 15 small flounder and no keepers in NY, or catch a random keeper flatty here every now and then here in Corpus while targeting reds and trout. Either way, I don't think the fishery is managed particularly well in either place. Atleast in NY, I think they could have benefitted from having an upper slot limit, so that some big brood stock could develop, and not have a massive population of 18 inch fish, which is what appears to be the case up there. Any how, Im stepping down from the soapbox, hope some of this helped, and good luck yankee.

ltorna1, I am glad that I am not the only fanatic as pertaining to flounder fishing. It is good to know that there are other flounder pounders out there. I am intrigued at some of the responses and suggestions given in this site. I plan on experimenting some and use tactics that I have seen up in Norfolk, VA, Myrtle Beach, SC, and of course NY. Hope to meet you out there some day...

I've done well on flounder with DOA shrimp bumped along the bottom.

An old timer used to fish for nothing but flounder out on the concrete pier on the NAS. He used nothing but a cane pole and live pinfish for bait, fishing right next to the seawall on the Dimmit (east) side. He never caught a lot but he always caught some and many were monsters! Shocked

He had no need for a reel because of the fact that he was fishing right under his feet............................ something about flounder and vertical structure seems to be in order.

Thanks for the insight landlocked beachbum. I have heard this flounder behavior by a few fellow fishermen. I will be targeting this type of structure during the weekend.
