On some good advise from a friend that told me my 2003 Evinrude was not an engine that should be worked on under a shade tree, I have decided to seek a professional. Can anyone recommend a repair shop in the Bluff that is fair and reliable?

Your right you didn't ask for quality of work and telling the truth.

In that case IMO the answer is still none.

Mike

David does the '03 require the ability of the mechanic to have the computer programs?

Yes. This engine is fuel injected and definitely needs the diagnostic equipment to determine the problem.

I have used D & J Marine YEARS ago. Talked to them this morning and they do have the equipment needed. Just looking for the best experience possible.

I guess in that case you are limited to whoever has the computer diagnostic programs for the Evinrude.

Kind of like the old "good, cheap, and quick" analogy! Shocked

Call Manuel at Portland Marine. One of the best in the area, especially with Evinrudes. Not in the Bluff, but worth the trip. He is honest and a great mechanic.

I would think you might want to do some basic checks yourself before paying someone $50-$100 an hour only to find you have a blown fuse or a loose connector.

Have you checked the fuses under the cowl? pull a spark plug and check for fire and fuel.

By the way, you can pull the trouble codes without the computer software, the proceedure is identified in the repair manual.

Some basic understanding of what makes your engine work could be helpful someday on the water. It's not shade tree mechanics, it's good sense. I wouldn't recommend attempting an overhaul to most folks but checking a few items, Sure!

361 510-3267. I have use Kevin before and he is mobile. He comes to you and will diagnose for 35.00. If you want him to fix it then of course he will give you an estimate. If you do not then you pay him the diagnose fee. He was fair with me and got me back on the water in the same day. Hope you have good luck with whoever you use.[/i]

Ran through some basics. Very good education on this computerized marvel.

Some things I am learning.....

With the new fuel ethanol mixtures, regular grade fuel does not have the kick it once had, so using higher octane fuel.

Always use the marine version of Sta-bil. The red stuff does not take care of the water condensation issues.

The education continues....
