Headed to the beach this weekend. My friend fishmicki and family will be at the 6mm. Want to head out to the rigs for snapper via kayak.

Anyone interested please post up. Safety in numbers is a good thing.

Just looked at the bob hall surf cam and the water is flat.

I hope it stays that way.

how long does it take you to get to the rigs. the water is flat because it is still early. look at bob hall cam after lunch. that is why i just hit up my brother in law to spark up the boat and head out. i would be dead tired as soon a i got there if i had to kayak it.

It's only 3 miles! I'm 40 and 25-30 pounds overweight and have no problem paddling for a couple of hours.
What else do you have to do on the beach?
Drink? (Not opposed to fermented beverages at all.)

It's good exercise and if you get some snapper your fishing is done for the weekend, at least as far as meat goes. If want to catch and release, setup with a carolina rig and fish bites and catch all the whiting you could possibly want.

While I myself do not go to the rigs, my hubby does and the last time it took about 45 minutes. Coming back is faster as you generally have any wind behind you. He's not overweight, and we paddle a lot in the lakes and rivers around San Antonio regularly.

No, it's not for everyone, but those that do it aren't really crazy either.

I will be in town(from Austin) this weekend as well and was looking to do that as well since the wind will be at our favor in the morning and then a little in our favor in the afternoon. What rigs do you usually use. When I troll the surf I just use a abu with 50lb power pro, or a spinning reel spooled with power pro. I also take my speargun and snorkle stuff. I have seen Ling to 40lbs brought from the rigs via spear.
let me know if yall will be out there for sure my e-mail is
sambo676@aol.com
To everyone reading this, it is a very easy yak out to the rigs, plus you see tons of aquatic life on the way with the water as clear as it is.

What lakes do you go to around San Antonio? I'm out almost every weekend.

We'll be there sometime Sat morning...hoping to leave SA early, but with a 12 year old fishergirl joining us, we may have a tough time getting out on time. We do plan to set camp at the 6mm with a white Z-71 and 2 kayaks. I'm sure Fishbill will go out within hours of getting there. I hope the seas stay as good as they looked today!

Any scuba shop will have spear guns. JBL is a moderate priced gun and good for beginers. Academy will have your fins snorkle and mask, the longer the fin the better for snorkleing and free diving.

I will be in a green jeep grand cherokee with a blueish oceankayak"prowler" on top and a Irish flag sticker on the bottom left corner of my back door. I will be done there early about 6am to get some bait and maybe do some topwater action then off to the rigs I go.
I heard good reports of snapper and some ling from some guy that went down a few weeks ago.
My name is Sam or Sambo whatever ya want to call me.
Hope to see you all on the sand and or at the rig.

Keep on fishing

Sambo

Fishmicki how did ya'all do?

We were in the red truck loaded to capacity and stopped and talked to you on our way to the 30's on Saturday.

Hi there...great to meet you guys on Saturday. The guys, Big Daddy, Working Bird and FishBill headed to the rig on Saturday while I had some much needed alone time for 3 hours. They did awesome at the rig. Limits on red snapper and several lane and vermillion snapper.

On Sunday, I decided that I ought to go with them--WHATABLAST!--the paddle is definitely not for wimps, but the seas were flat, the water reminded me of the San Marcos River it was so clear, and we were treated to many sights. On our way out, we scared up a school of minhaden that jumped in front of the yaks as we passed through...like, 50+ of them popping out of the water! SO COOL! Once at the rig, we immediately hit fish and the water was clear enough to see far down the legs of the rig...I've never seen so many fish. We caught several snapper, spade fish, angel fish. I decided it was too hot to have the pfd on and what happens? I hook a huge something that pulls harder than any fish I have ever caught...I ended up getting untied from Fishbill and I start going away from the rig. I thought I was going to be pulled out of my yak! Bill comes and gets me and holds me steady as I reel and reel, making no progress. I'm thinking shark, or ling. Finally, I ended up giving the rod to Bill and up comes a sting ray that was about 30" across. I hooked the side of it so we released it with a little owie. I know having someone finish off is a wimpy thing to do, but I was having back spasms pulling that thing up and I wanted to be able to continue fishing.

We saw several large sea turtles, one with only 3 legs. We snorkeled out there as well, and my friend Working Bird saw several tropical fish among the millions of fish we saw. You could see down 30 feet or more it was so clear. Working Bird and I head back to camp before FishBill and Big Daddy, only to get off course and go an additional mile too far south so our total paddle for the day was probably 8-9 miles roundtrip. Am I sore today.....oh yeah!

I will definitely continue going to the rig when the seas are like they were today. We had it to ourselves except for a 30 minute period when a motor boat fished with us. I never saw him hit on anything, while we were closer to the rig pulling up snapper left and right. He left soon after that.

Tell me your story!
