Have they returned now that things are warming up a bit?
They are my favorite fish....
I hope that cold weather doesn't keep them away.... |

They are WARM water fish. The many times that I lived and/or fished in CC over many different years I never even saw one. When I went down to Port Isabel about 15 years ago in THANKSGIVING they were the fish that I caught the most by fishing close to the rocks on the north jetty. Just that little bit further south makes all the difference in temp and mangroves being there. _________________ Dave

I read reports during the freeze of dead mangroves in Matagorda harbor. Hadn't heard any other reports elsewhere.
If they were hanging in Matagorda in January, so I think they can tolerate some cold if they can find deep enough waters; after all, it was pretty cold before that hard freeze; some say they had already migrated to the gulf.
I have heard that areas such as the Fina docks, though deep, have too strong a current for them to hang out there in winter, so they probably bugged out. I guess an area like Conn Brown would not have this problem, but I have not heard of a fish kill there.
If they bugged out, which they probably did, will they be back this summer at all? O will they migrate South....
If not, where will they go?
I just wanted to see if anybody had caught any in the usual places and if they were back yet. I guess not, as no one has said they have caught/seen any....
Anybody caught any Snook or Smacks yet? |

Don't forget the red tide we had this year. It was pretty ugly. It has been a weird year overall, with the lack of hurricanes, absence of seaweed, freezing temperatures, nasty red tide, and unexpected death of Corey Haim. _________________ “Painting is an essentially concrete art and can only consist of the representation of real and existing things.”

Ditto on the "weird year". Worst year 2009 of fishing I had in the coastal bend that I can remember. The fishing will bounce back, it will just take some time. We tried for some Grey Snapper in the bay a few weeks ago at some usual haunts, but had NO luck.
I'm glad I'm not trying to make a living taking people fishing. I feel for the guides. One good thing, it will thin out some of the poor guides and help the guys that survive the lean times, with more business when things get back to what we think is normal. _________________ CARPE DIEM |
