(Corpus Christi, Texas)-Superintendent Joe Escoto announced the Staff at Padre Island National Seashore will present information and deliver training to the public about what they should do if they see a nesting Kemp’s ridley sea turtle or stranded sea turtle. This session will be held from 10:00 am until noon on Saturday, April 3 at St. Andrews by the Sea Catholic Church, 14238 Encantada Drive Avenue, Corpus Christi, TX 78418.

Kemp’s ridley is the most endangered sea turtle species in the world and North Padre Island, including Padre Island National Seashore, is the most important Kemp’s ridley nesting beach in the U.S. Each year, the National Seashore leads the nation in the number of nests found at a single location. Increasing numbers of nests have been found in recent years, strongly suggesting promising signs of success for the long-term efforts of a multi-agency partnership. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Sea Turtle, Inc., University of Texas, ARK, Texas A&M University at Galveston, NOAA Fisheries, Sea Turtle Restoration Project, and others play a critical role in these restoration efforts.

Locally, Kemp’s ridley nesting occurs from April through mid-July, primarily on Gulf of Mexico beaches. Four other sea turtle species also occasionally nest locally. Hundreds of sea turtles are found washed ashore or floating, alive or dead (stranded), in Texas each year. These strandings occur year-round, in both Gulf and bay areas.

The public finds and reports many of the nesting and stranded sea turtles documented on the Texas coast each year. Help from the public is needed so that these threatened and endangered animals are found, documented, and protected. Other training sessions are being given to sea turtle patrol biologists and volunteers, and others that will work on local beaches during the nesting season. This information and training session is primarily for the public and is free-of-charge.

Good, this will give us something to do while creeping down the beach at 15 mph.
