I know I can get aot of good advise from everyone here.
I am interested in a heavier set up than my 7 foot with Curado for beach and jetty casting heavy plugs for jacks and kings this summer. |

I would suggest an Abu Garcia 6500c3 and a 8' to 10' surf rod. I am waiting for Academy to get their American Rodsmith surf rods in. They make a nice 8' and a 10'. The 8' Ugly Stick 80lb. class rod is great also for the jetty. I have landed some bruiser 45"+ Jacks off SPJ with one of those Ugly Sticks and a 6500 series reel.

2nd them Diawa SHA . man that 6:1 retrive is awesome, got the 40, perfect for surf with amount of line it holds. Casts forever on a 11-12ft rod. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

How's the drag???? All of the Daiwas that I've ever tried had a jerky or surgy drag, but I've never used any of the larger models. I like reels that have a butter smooth drag and I'm willing to sacrifice speed/power, and such to get it, although these days that's not necessary. _________________ Dave

I have an Ambassaduer 7000c3 with a 10ft Ugly Stick with a 30lb Big Game Fishing Line and have always felt confident with the big boys on the line. I did lose 1 huge fish on it at Packery Channel but it was because of the rocks that cut my line.

Just remember that this guy said he wanted to cast plugs. The Daiwa sealine series reel does not have a levelwind. I have a 30shv and I love it for banging bait out into the surf. But I believe that for casting plugs, you want a levelwind. I have casted plugs to big Jacks with my Penn 525mag and it is a LOT of work with no levelwind. IMHO, the Abu's will handle any Jack out there with the right fisherman at the helm. It's called playing the fish. 15lb. mono is plenty.

You said it........................... that's why a great drag and good technique will beat beefy equipment and lesser technique. _________________ Dave

Yeah, I have a 40 on a Breakaway HDX, and can cast it out to the third gut, but still can't cast it without a big ol birds nest!!!
I gotta practice more..... |

There has already been some good reels mentioned. Here's my opinion. A level wind is very nice for chunking lures all day. It can be done without one but it sure gets annoying after a while.
I've got 2 set ups for chunking big lures...
One is an ABU 6500 on an 8' Shimano Teramar rated for 1-4oz. It's loaded with 300 yards of Power Pro. Great combo for jacks and kings.
The other is a Shimano TR200G on an 8' custom rod loaded with 25# mono. This combo will cast 2 ounces on up. Great for jacks, kings and Tarpon.
An ABU 7000 is roughly the same size as the Shimano TR200G. The 7000s are nice reels. The TR200G is about $80 and has a nice smooth drag (it actually has a bearing in the drag stack).
When throwing lures always consider weight of the combo into the equation. Throwing big lures is alot of work and a heavy combo will tire you out. To keep the weight down I'd recommend a graphite rod that is built similarly to a bay fishing rod rather than a surf rod. Musky rods are a good option...after all, that is what they are made for, chunking big lures all day.
Also, consider the types of lures that you throw. If your lures require a cast and reel technique a 10' surf rod is fine but if you are throwing top waters or big soft plastics where you need to work the lure an 8' rod is much more comfortable.
Just my opinion others may differ. |

| I would look for a rod built using the St Croix 8 ft. 2M80MHF Blank and pair it with a Abu Garcia REVO Toro Winch. You can cast big plugs a mile all day long and not wear yourself out. Costly set-up but it is as good as it gets. |

Always there to help, eh, Nick.
For lures in the 2-4 oz. range, I like my Garcia 6500 on a Breakaway 10'6".
Works for me. |
