In todays 8/16/06 CC Times

Not enough jobs

I was laid off from a senior engineering position with a small oil and gas firm in Corpus Christi. Just too many high-dollar dry holes.

I was quickly faced with the same problem many professionals have been faced with in the Corpus Christi area: lack of alternative job openings. I contacted several oil and gas companies in Houston area and got high-dollar-value offers in just a few days.

So we are leaving. Corpus Christi will stay a backwater town if it cannot get viable companies into the area. Just look at all the empty downtown buildings. When I first worked in Corpus Christi in 1976, downtown was full of viable companies; not so today.

Building on a barrier island will not solve these core issues. Just a few developers and their vassals will gain short-term benefits. Property owners, a few low-paid tourist jobs and city tax revenue will be blown away by the first Category 3 hurricane.

I will miss many friends, but plan to come back often and visit. I will just pay my property taxes to Montgomery County and The Woodlands.

Your right building on the island wont help downtown corpus or the job situation. Need to rethink the political situation and clean house and start from scratch.

Money talks and BS walks. I'm now working in Greenspoint area in North Houston and will be commuting ~30 minutes to The Woodlands. This is not too bad. I get 4 weeks vacation and with oil field perks I will get lots of time on the water! If your in the oil field Houston is the center of the world!
