As I'm gearing up for PINS this fall, I need to ask this simple, little, easy, question.
Do you stic the PVC rod holder in the sand and push really hard, or do you drive the PVC rod holder in the sand?
I use re-bar rod holders and would like to start using PVC rod holders. And the last time I was on the beach I tried sticking one in the sand and I couldn't get it 6 inches in the sand.... How far do you guys get them in the sand for long rods and how do you do it??
thanks, _________________ FIRELINE WILL ' GET ER DUN '! |

depth 18"
IF there is shell better get a shovel and dig it down. it's easy in the sand no worries. other than that either use a mallet, or suck the end as you push down. |

| rubber mallet preferred to preserve equipment. Sledge also works great, go deep enough to where you have plenty of resistance to a pull out to sea. angle it at a 20 degree angle away from the water. |

FireLine. Cut a taper on one end of the length of PVC. That will be the end going into the sand. Pick a spot that is packed sand, (I like the edge of the breaking waves, water in the sand makes it much easier) grab a hold of the other end and using a twisting motion push the rod holder as far down as you need to or can, the deeper the better. If the tide is incoming, you need to keep an eye out as the water will erode the sand from around the PVC and you can lose the PVC and the pole. If you don't want them that close to the water, then like Big Sherm says and dig it down. If you use a hand sledge to hammer it down, take a piece of 2 X 4 also to use as hammering surface so you don't break the PVC. _________________ WORK TO LIVE, LIVE TO FISH |

Got my PVC at Home Depot 3 years ago and the guys there cut it for me at the bottom angles I wanted. Big rubbber mallet has worked great for PVC and anchoring my tent. Almost tried it out on a hardhead last year after getting my bait stolen too many times one day. If you stick the PVC in to good...lightly hit the top with the mallet to loosen everything up and twist out as longrod stated. My 2x4's have stains because they are also convinient for filleting fish on and have been used in soft sand under the tires too. Fortunately, I have never had to bring the shovel out for the tires. _________________ Become a part of the food chain, wade fish.

Fireline,
Buy a creature catcher from Roy's and use it. The PVC fits perfectly in the hole it makes and it holds tight.
Give me a call and if we don't go down together, you can use mine.
See ya on the sand,

I use 5 foot lengths of PVC, cut at a 45 degree angle on the end. A rubber mallet for pounding them in. I go 18 to 24" down depending on how soft the area is. I go straight up and down, but if there is any angle, it should be less than 10 degrees towards the water.
Some people also use 6 foot lengths, and cut two small holes near the top for sliding a bar through, then they work it back and forth into the sand.
Salty Dog had some of the most ingenious designed ones I have seen, with two and three pole holders per pipe at the top that work in a similar fashion, and they sit 4 to 5 feeet up off the sand. Maybe he will give some design tips! _________________ GOBZA!!!

The monster rod holder you are talking about had a second rod holder and a beer holder. It fell over and broke, it had some design flaws. To many joints.
My other one still works. It can be seen next to me.

I would recomend that you put a splice on the top to help reinforce it while driving the holder in. I also added one of those cheep rulers to the side. Helps in keeping the small whiting out of the cooler.
I put mine at the waters edge and just work them side to side untill they stop going down. This usually gets them down about 1-1.5'
Hope this helps

Mallet, schmallet! Turn your back to the waves, place the pointy end of the PVC rod holder in the wet sand, slanting the top of it towards the dunes a bit so it won't become a rod launcher , and wiggle the top from side to side while pushing downwards. Each time you rock it left or right, you should feel it slide a little deeper. It will become harder to swing as it goes down, so increase the rate of occillation. The sand will partially liquify as you wiggle the rod holder, but will set solidly when you stop. Bury at least a foot of the rod holder, making sure to slant it away from the water, and it will hold up to really big bites.
Last tip: when you put a rod and reel in the holder, set your anti-reverse and loosen the drag. Forget the clicker; if you or your fishing buddy aren't close enough to the rod to see the strike, you don't deserve to catch anything. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

This is very important if you are using spinning set-up, as I have learned the hard way, that too tight a drag will cause lose of fish, leaders, and all the expensive bits on the leaders. _________________ GOBZA!!!

Johnny knows of what he speaks. A few years ago near the North sticks I watched as the guy fishing up the beach a short way, paddle back in from the 3rd or 4th gut after setting his bait. He set the pole in the rod holder and promptly walked into the dunes, I assumed to call on Mother Nature. A minute later I glanced at his poles and saw the one that he had just set bowed way over. I knew right off that he had forgotten to set the drag and took off as fast as I could. The pole was bending further and further as it pulled the PVC pole holder toward and down to the water. I was still 20 yards from the pole went it launched in a gracefull arc out almost to the second sand bar where with an entry that would make an Olympic diver proud, it dissappeared into the water with hardly a splash.
Just as it went under the guy comes out of the dunes and looks at me like 'what the hell are you doing here?' and then took inventory of his poles and realized that he was one short. I had just started to explain when he started slapping himself about the head and yelling " I forgot to set the drag" Seems it was a brand new rig and had cost him about $800.00 and was the first time to fish with it. Bummer. _________________ WORK TO LIVE, LIVE TO FISH |
