|

Had a bunch of Honey Do's today and got done about 3 o'clock. Grabbed the camera and headed for the beach. Drove onto the beach at Bob Hall Pier and drove to the North Sticks and back again. Wind was up but the water was beautiful. Saw nothing working the water and the birds were all sitting on the beach. Lots of people fishing all the way to the Sticks. Those I talked to had caught nothing and some of them had been there all day.
Water conditions when I got there.
Spent most of the time taking pics of birds. Here are some of the better pics.
This Blue Heron was on the sand near the dunes and as I approached he turned and casually walked up the face of the dune. You can see his tracks.
I pulled up and waited, hoping he would turn around. I sat there for about ten minutes and he didn't move at all. I got out of the truck and slowly walked up behind him.
Thought I was busted when he turned his head a bit.
He did not see me and turned away again. I got a little closer.
I then made a very slight clicking sound with my tongue, hoping he would turn his head, but I just missed a great shot as he took off instead.

It's a Nikon D60 and the two lenses I have are 18-55mm and 55-200mm.
I need another lens. The 200 doesn't quite cut it.
This was a pair of Caracalas that were just too far off. If I had been using a tripod on a calm day, I could have cropped a little closer. Hand shake was just a little too much for good resolution.

longrod,
I do have 75mm on my Canon, looking for a 300mm. Do you have image stabilizer lens? Those IS lens sure are expensive! Thinking bout going with regular 300mm lens but not sure if IS lens make a big difference or not.... |

Yes, both my lenses are equiped with shake reduction. Almost a must as I am not as steady as I used to be. While not the expert, shooting with a 300mm lens or better would require an extremely steady hand and a very gentle trigger squeeze if not shooting with a tripod. Not sure just how effective a stabilizer lens on a 300mm would be zoomed all the way out but would undoubtedly beat not having one.
Probably a more experienced photog on this site could better answer your question. _________________ WORK TO LIVE, LIVE TO FISH |
