Woe be the day that I ever get an e-mail from a school official that says anything like this...I think I'd dress my kids in head-to-toe camo the next day.

Statesman.com's Education blog is reporting that on opening day for dove season this year there were gunshots within earshot of an Austin-area elementary school. Devin Padivail, principal of Kelly Lane Middle School sent out a note to parents that said this:

"Apparently today is the beginning of dove season, a day when folks can hunt down and destroy the international symbol of peace," Padivail said in an e-mail sent to parents. "There are either a lot of doves or someone that isn't a very good hunter."

That's bound to make him a lot of friends. There were a handful of these stories on opening day. One of the comments on their site makes sense to me. User OTWB says:

Perfect example of when you have city people move out to outlying areas. Few decades ago most of the kids would have been discussing dove season months ago.

Maybe there needs to be a rural or exurban education program.

What a tool but that doesn't surprise me. I remember how empty the school was the day before deer season opened too!

The international symbol of peace tastes good wrapped in bacon with a jalapeno.

Maybe if people shot more dove and less of each other we'd have more peace.

Tree huger principal, you right he must be from N.Y.,I think that if your into saving some kind of animal species buy your self the Resident Super Combo License, now that takes care of every animal out there, you have all kinds of people protesting, for everything we are the only country that you can drive in any state,to go protest what we should do is support each other and especially OUR TROOPS that give up everything to keep our U.S.A. Free.
