Headed out after work hoping to get a variety of fish. Well it worked. Ended the day with 1 spanish mack, a nice gafftop, 4 nice mangroves (I am trying to keep only 12" or more now) and 6 trout. Caught lots of mangroves undersize especially when the wind and rain would move through. There was lots of finger mullet everywhere each throw of the net got 10-20 of them. Lots of small trout and small reds were working them hard and they were spooking most of the morning.
Now for the weird fish. When I caught it I thought I was hung up on bottom then I thought I was dragging a rock. Instead it was this guy. When I would reach for him he would puff up like a pufferfish and get about double his size. He was about 12-14" long. An the weird part was he would shock me when I would hold him. He would put his fins out and suddenly zap not quite painful but it did make me drop him and yes I poked him a cople of times to make sure I wasn't imagining it. Can anyone tell me what this is?

| I caught one of those 2 days ago at packery. I didn't know what it was either. I used pliers to pull out hook and pushed it back in water with my foot. I thought i was stuck so I held spool and pulled it, then it came in. |

| The surf has been full of those Stargazers lately on SPI. They bury in the sand. I have shuffled up lots of them this year. Dang things make me walk on the water every time! |

Lesser Electric Rays will also shock you. B.J. Noles found out the hard way. He holds the state record. When he caught it he was a little kid and yelped out in pain when he touched it. His dad, Byron, thought it was a one time deal and that they have to wait to zap you again. He was wrong! He said it felt like he had zapped himself with a spark plug wire with the engine running |

kept one of these guys in a cooler of ice for 12 hours to bring it home to show my teacher back in undergrad. Opened up the cooler, picked it up, still got a shock and it still was flipping a little when i touched it. Maybe just reflexes??? Either way, definitely one of the coolest families of fish out there.
Nice report by the way, excellent haul! _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

If you want to catch one in the surf, toss a small finger mullet at the south end of the lip where the deepest part of the wade gut ends( also the place where surf crabs bite your toes) That is where they hang out. |
