A friend and I are making a quick trip to Rockport next week and want to fish a little at the Packery jetty....we're in a 2wd vehicle. Any advice on where to park( so as not to get stuck) and what to use (bait/artificial) would be appreciated.

Assuming you can drive to either jetty, remember you'll either have to have a beach parking sticker or park a long ways from the beach.

How far? You can park for free by the boat ramp on the north side of the channel, then walk about a quarter of a mile east to the north jetty. You reach this parking area from SH 361 by turning onto Zahn Road, then making another right immediately onto the ramp access road.

Your other free option is to park in the lot behind the seawall. That'll leave you with a half-mile hike to the south jetty. To reach this, take a left off Park Road 22 onto Whitecap, then another left at Windward. The lot will be on your right just past the Holiday Inn.

The sand along the N jetty is soft and deep w/ in about 50 feet of the jetty walkway. You should be fine as long as you stay where the sand is packed from others nearer the beach/lifeguard stands.

Live shrimp, finger mullet, piggies etc. w/ a lemon rig or carolina rig will get you fish in the channel or the surfside. Fish as close to the rocks as you can.

Hopefully the water will clear/warm up for your trip and GL.

Thank you Trash Heap and Outcast...we'll give it a try. Parking on the beach is $12 but the lots are free? I like the way the south jetty looks Google shows .65 miles to the jetty from the parking lot next to the Holiday Inn.

TANSTAAFL

Free in the sense that you don't need to pay again to park there. The existing lot by the ramp was partially funded by the Packery TIF, the state, and the USFWS. It's built on land leased by the City of CC from the state.

The site for the lot behind the seawall was donated by adjacent private landowners, and construction for it and the wheelchair ramp connecting it to the beach were paid for using the TIF money.

The construction and maintenance of the unbuilt parking lots next to the base of each jetty were also funded similarly by the TIF, but for some reason the City won't build them, nor will it stop charging that fee for those who park where the lots are supposed to be. I keep hoping someone challenges the $150 fine in court by pointing that out to a judge.

BTW, the state allows the City to charge for the beach parking stickers as a way to finance cleaning the beach. However, as noted above, the sites of the jetty parking lots already have a separate maintenance fund, so we're looking at double-dipping.
