newbie here, just wanted to see what everyone thought of these lures i made in my spare time. i hadn't used them much, but i have caught a red on one already. the only drawback i see so far is the weight, they're super heavy, but you can cast them a mile...and yes, they're solid copper !

Cool...
The drawback I see is the weight combined with the exposed treble hook will make it impossible to fish a shallow grass bottom in the bay, but they would probably work well in the surf. |

| They look like they would be real good in the surf or off BHP for reds because there you need the extra weight(tidal movement). If you could make the same design in something silver colored you would have a dynamite smack lure when they go after the small watermelon shad in the late summer early fall. If they're cheap to make. |

| I used to make some of those myself but drilled holes in them to create bubbles. Probably my luck but I never caught anything on one. I'll see if I can find them and post a pic. |

thanks for the replies. i do have some in stainless that i'm currently working on, and i already had plans for the weedless ones.
as far as using them in deep water, i hadn't really thought of that, but i can see how that could work! thanks again for the replies fellas!

the only issue I see is that of the swivels. redfish are notorious for destroying them. other than that, they look great. post up some pics when you catch some fish on them. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Reminds me of myself as a ten year old kid. I'd take a quarter and use my mother's jewelry equipment to make fishing spoons. I'd use a hand-cranked, gear driven smasher; an anvil with concave indent, ball pinned hammer, electric drill and buffing machine. Simple but a lot of fun.
I hope you perfect your lure making techniques. I never have for my lures are too personal, having been treated as pieces of art and worthy of keepsakes instead of as something to test and snag on an oyster reef. These lures are back in Texas and (gulp) nearly 30 years old now! |

Cool and simple idea. Never thought of it myself. I will try it, but I will use another split ring rather then the snap swivel. I am not sure how, but those things come undone.
Do they have any action when pulled at a steady speed? Seems like you might be able to play with the angles of the cuts, maybe offset them, and get them to do something. Heavy as they are, will they stay off a shallow bottom without a smoking retrieve? Tried them in the surf yet? If so, do they dig into the damn sandbars on retrieve? I hate that. |

thanks for the advice! i had heard that about the swivels, but i haven't had the luck to snag a big ol' red yet. i'll keep that in mind though. the one i caught with it was only 15", but i was practically doin backflips just because it worked. figures, i didn't have my camera with me. they have decent tail action on a normal retrieve. when you pop em, they slide forward and in an upward motion, then tail down wiggling the tail side to side. if i make them a little longer, i'd imagine they'll have more action, but they'll be heavier. you don't have to smoke your reel on the retrieve either to get em in. a normal to slightly faster than normal retrieve will get them in just fine. i haven't tried them in the surf yet, but i imagine they'll do just fine. thanks for the replies & advice again! _________________ Jay

for casting distance/ aerodynamics, by the looks I'd give it a 10.
By the looks of it, it seems the action may be on the low end of the scale though. Either way nice looking lure. A flashy/feather tail of some sort may help get that needed appeal.

| They look good. Just the fact that you caught a fish off of something you put together is a neat deal. Maybe next time it will be a little bigger. |

| Pretty cool looking lure but I think you will have problems with the copper discoloring pretty quick once they are in the saltwater |

The proof is in the fish caught on the lures. I've seen similar lures in california years ago for pier fishing pretty much the same design only lead filled for casting distance. I never caught crap on them. I think a smack would hit it without a problem. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |
