Rather than retype, I cut this from my post on TKF.

Wow - what a trip. I was a little skeptical about what we'd find on the rigs that close to Port A, but I knew the trip would be interesting after it got started. I got loaded up first, so I went through the breakers and started chunking a Mann-o-Lure in the 3rd gut. It was deep - 22'. I had several missed strikes w/ smaks, then I got a solid hit. It stayed down, and tugged hard. Once landed, it was a 30" Atlantic Sharpnose. The rest of the group caught up & we headed out. It took a while to get to the rig. I saw lots of birds on the first rig, but by the time we got there, they moved off. Yakin Ag dropped a ribbon, and got an immediate hook up - a 4-5ft Blacktip foul hooked in the gill slit, then it was slow for a while. I anchored after not having much luck trolling my ribbon fish. I had a ribbon out w/ a small weight and was getting small hits on my bottom rig. I caught a 30 or so inch skipjack, then I got a 35" Ling. I switched my king rig out and took off the weight. I let it out in the current about 100ft, and then started chumming w/ squid & trash fish I cast netted up. BAM! King on. Went for a ride and landed a 40ish inch King. I paddled back to my anchor and hooked back on. I was getting ready to cut it in half to put in my 48qt ice chest, then i thought, I'm going to put a ribbon out first then cut the fish. So I did the same thing as last time. Let it out, threw a couple of handfulls of chum out. I opened my knife to start cutting that king up, and my reel was screaming like nothing else. So I have this 40" or so king between my legs so Its staying there. I disconnect from my anchor and go for a ride. This fish took some time to wear out. When I saw it the first time I knew it was 50" + . Then I look down and I saw a couple of Mahi's with it. They dissapeared. finally I ge tit tired out and get itin the yak. I was whooped. I don't have a camera I take BTB, but Capt. Tony got a few shots offshore. Yall' need to hear the other story about the noob from Yakin AG. It is downright hilarious to some degree. Anyway, we all caught kings, I think yakin ag got his first king, as did tony, and so did our Noob, Dan, sort of I will say. He got broke in good. Pix will show up as soon as I can figure out how to get back into my photobucket acct. I took it in to be weighed for CCA, but it was way short of the leader, but a thrill none the less to catch in a yak.

I have a 17 carolina skiff. Would I be able to get out those rigs ok in calm seas?

I have a little offshore experience from when I owned a 20 foot Wellcraft V-20 steplift. But not much experience.

Not Familiar with that boat - I suppose you could. How high are the gunnels? We go on our yaks, but they don't fill with water - they are sit on tops. Water washes over and through them.

I haven't done this in a while - hope this works.

The guy holding the Kingfish is Yak'n ag. I don't recall the length on that fish. I'm waiting on pix to be emailed to me that has me holding the fish in the yak offshore. Rocky at Roys did the official measuring - not me. Trip was a blast.

How often - well, not often enough, but I'll post up when I do go. Also, if you go to texas kayak fisherman, I post up all my BTB trips there. Whenever I go, I try to get a small group together. We had 4 guys on this trip. I try to get out 2-3 time per month. I'm going Tuesday afternoon after the City Council Meeting for a quick trip if council doesnt' get out too late.

I seen a group of yaks out there Saturday and thought it was you after reading your post last week. Nice King!

My Friends also caught some nice Kings in that same area, while tied off to a platform letting the baits free line in the current.
