We recently went fishing with a guide for the first time. Is it normal for the guide to fish with you? We fished along a reef from a boat and the way the anchor was set only the person at the back of the boat could cast close enough to the reef to catch fish. There were 3 of us and our guide stood at the back of the boat and hauled in one fish after another, including 3 - 25" reds and countless drum. I finally just put my pole down and watched. We ended up with 1 redfish, 2 sheepshead, and 4 drum. Needless to say, I was really pissed. But I still didn't have the nerve to say anything. What do ya'll think?

You should have said something. It was your money that was paying for the trip.
Why couldn't you fish the back of the boat also?

I had a very similar experience on a guided trip but I didn't pay for the trip so I didn't say anything.

Yes, my husband tipped "her". It was an older lady. She was a very aggressive and I was intimidated. Next time I am going to ask around before hiring someone I don't know about. We still enjoyed it but it could have been so much more fun if we were the ones reeling in the reds.

Yes.. guides normally fish with their clients. They often catch fish to show their clients there are indeed fish there and how to catch them. And the back of the boat is where they usually fish from, leaving the front of boat for their clients to have some room and cast to the fish first.

I thought they changed to laws so that guides could not fish or keep fish while they were working. Confused

They can fish. They can no longer keep a limit for themselves when they are under charter.

I have only fished once with a guide, and he would move us around, so who ever was not getting the fish, he reposition us, i thought it was cool, and he also spent a bunch of time repositioning the boat to be just right.

he show us techniques and explain all bait, structure all of it

i only got to go because it was for work, can't afford it.

GoinCoastal described my experiences exactly. I would encourage you to ask around especially at this forum when you hire a guide but nevertheless I wouldn't be too upset about it. When I fish with guides often they catch more than I do, I normally chaulk it up to them being better fishermen than I. Next time you may consider asking, "What are you doing that I'm not doing that is causing you to catch all the fish?" Maybe they will get the hint and move or, better yet, maybe they are doing something you are not and will tell you what it is to help you improve.

..in Texas. It's really a regional thing. In many states, guides don't fish on a paid charter but rather guide.

I fished with a guide like that in port oconnor one time... he was arrogant, and not a good personality.

I had brought three guys who had been fishing only a couple times before ever, and he anchored up in places where they could cast to the drop offs, or whatever structure we were trying to fish. I've fished a lot and could barely cast far enough... I asked him to move closer and he said it would spook the fish....

you don't usually have problems like that with most guides though... just a few bad seeds out there like anything else

Depending what kind of trip it is bay offshere, I want the guides or deckhnads fishing with me, and having fun to. Back of the boat is where I fish when I have company, so they get the premo spot. If thats the only spot you fished, for any period of time ,and truley the only bite to be had was from back there, yeah Id say the guide should have swapped yall around.

Sorry you had a bad trip, but as others have said get some reccomendations off this site, and Im sure you will have a better trip.
