I'm looking for references to Baumann's Propellers in Houston. A friend of mine is trying to pick up a stainless prop to replace the aluminum prop he has. He owns a custom built composit boat and is not being taken seriously beacuse hisperformance numbers are much better than would be expected from a production boat. I know Baumann has a good reputation and been in business since I was born so they must know their stuff. Anyway I looking for a contact that will be considerate and work with me friend. I'm also wondering if they allow on the water trials?

Thanks, MD Wink

My 1st Bauman Prop came on my 19PF from GCM back in 2002, spun the hub with only 3 hrs on the motor, sent back, spun the replaced hub with about 1 hr, sent back.
Called and they assured me the problem was identified, they had received a bad batch of hubs, and that the replacem, ent they would send next "will not fail"!
It didn't,used about 20 hrs,put in the box to save ofr a spre.
Its lived there for the last 5 1/2 yrs...............I really ought to sell it.

I use Power-Tech props ever since, love em!

thats my story.

Hey MD this post isn't about buying a Power-Tech prop from Hartsell but it is about my last experience with the prople at Hatsell's Prop Repair.

I dropped a prop off last month for a new hub, I spun the current one. There seemed to be no problem when I dropped it off but the fellow that took the prop wasn't in the prop repair end off the business he did the alum. fabrication. I was told no problem and someone would call me.
That was on March 14th. No one called so I called them, talked to Mike and he told me that the hub would need to be ordered (no stock) and it would take three days. After three days no hub, no phone call, no propeller repaired.......I called again, said the part might have been lost in transit and would reorder. I said OK. Went over to Hartsell Prop repair this morning and picked up my prop....hub still not repaired.
Unfriggin beliveable.....these people are about as far away from customer service as anyone can get.
I've always had good things to say about this company but my eyes were open wide after this. Be real careful if you have them order anything for you. Like me you may never get it.

Moral of the story....Chris's Prop Repair/Coastal Propeller for me from now on......normal hub repair service takes 3 days. I've had alot of them done over the years.

Mike

Thanks for the update Mike. As long as it is taking me to get my boat back on the water I don't need the experience you just had. I'll lose my mind. I just dropped my rig at a local marine dealer to do the initial start on my Etec. I thought I was close but these guys have 3 weeks of back log because of all the stern-drive owners that didn't winterize their engines. I sure hope I don't have to wait thee weeks. Rolling Eyes

I'll give Chris's a call. I really want to a source that will let me test a few combinations before I buy or work with me to get the right setup.

Followed Capt. Singleterry's advice and went to see Chris at Coastal Propeller. We took a look at some calculations I put together from David Gerr's, Propeller Handbook. Chris gave my rig the quick look then went up into his inventory loft. He handed down five props of various dimensions. We picked one to start with which he installed. We headed for the City Harbor. We ran the first prop a couple laps inside the jettys. It had a good hole shot and kept the engine within WOT parameters. Top end speed was about 7 MPH less than I calculated. We swapped to a higher pitch just to see the difference. It was obviously too much wheel. We talked about options for larger diameter and less pitch but decided the first prop fit the bill given my needs. Chris gave me what I thought was a great price and agreed to work with me once I put more time and different loads in boat.

Thanks Capt for the great referral! That was about the smoothest process I've been through on this boat.

Also, want say that Capt. Singleterry is man of his word. He told me that if I needed anything to give him a call. After we trailered the boat and stopped for lunch and then visited Roy's, we headed to Marker 37 to launch and run the ICW for a while just to put some time on the engine. When we got there I noticed oil dripping from the front of the motor while it was tilted up. Since this is a brand new Etec I figured it needed to be checked out (I actually freaked out but that's another story). Didn't have the captain's number but knew I could find his business card at Clem's. Gave Capt a call explained the situation he gave me another referral and told exactly who to talk to. Guess what I did, exactly what I was told. I dropped the Captain's good name and was taken care of with great respect. Turned out that there was no problem, the oil drip was a side affect of breaking in a new Etec and that I was good to go. It was to late to launch cause I only had the one day so we headed back to SA. About an hour into the drive my phone rings and it's Capt. Singleterry checking in with me to see how things went. Just to let you know I have never chartered with him. He and I have never met in person. We have only communicated on the forum and through emails.

You're a good man Captain Singleterry. I'm going to be in touch and we are going to meet and have that drink we talked about. Wink

Thanks for everything.

MD Wink

Capt. Mike is a great guy but I have gotten reamed by the prop shop you went to. Took my $650 prop to him to get built back up from running shallow and he ruined it. Totally unbalanced (heard he didn't have a balancer even after I asked him if he did) and my motor about shook itself to death. Looked like he took a old grinder to it. Horrible. Took it back and told him what happened. Got it back and it was worse. You could have grated cheese on the edges when you should have shaved off of it when it was new. Took it elsewhere and they said it was unrepairable due to the buildup job he did. Had to buy a new one. Also, after a few days when I went to pick it up, it took him 45 minutes to find it after digging through all his crap to find it (don't know if he knew where he was if you know what I mean). Meanwhile trying to tell me that he had several better props for my boat even though he had never run one of my boats. I run a Lake & Bay Boca Grande and I ran 16 props before I settled on the one I did. This ain"t no Blue Wave or locally run boat. I was pretty upset and fed up and took the lick. Damn prop is sitting on my work bench as a paper weight. Just my opinion and that's it. This was about a year ago and hopefully he has kicked it up a notch. Put a hurtin on me though. Had to pay for the botch job and a new prop.

Mad Dog, I would go back and try several different props. Don't let him talk you into one. You said it was 7 mph slower than you expected, that's a lot. I know it's a pain but get one that works like it should. I spent two days propping my boat. Right prop=better gas mileage+performance. When you think you have a good one, try five more. All the props that were recommended for my boat were junk compared to the one I finally ended up with. The best recommended prop I had was 6mph slower and had a worse holeshot than the one I ended up with. I know it's a pain to do but it will be well worth it in the long run. I can't believe how many boats are improperly propped on the water. It's the most critical part between your boat and the water.
