How does everyone take care of there reels and tackle after fishing? I have been just hosing off everything and putting it away to dry. But was curious what everyone else does.

next time you're at Roys ask Lupe what you should do. I don't heed her advice every time and spent a lot of money getting them worked on every year it seems Embarassed

supposed to wipe them off instead of hosing, mist is better than pressure, release your drag tension between fishing, proper oil (not silicone), etc. etc. etc.

stuff I don't do.

People may not agree, but i used to put my spinning reels and bait casters in the dishwasher with non abrasive detergent. Set it on heat dry. I would put them in with string attached and they would come out perfectly clean. That has been over ten years and the all work great.

A buddy pointed out to me long ago that on Shimano paperwork that comes with spinning reels (Symeterie) it says "to spray after using with WD-40 after use".

i litely rinse the rod/reels while in the holder (vertical) on the boat at the car wash, then spray with WD-40,let set 10-20 minutes, wipe off excess, put zip lock baggie over (unzipped),place in vertiacl rod holders in boatbarn, and repeat again next trip.

Worked for 10 years now

I use to hose down thoroughly after each use, but that's WRONG way to go even wtih the priciest Shimano reels with stainless steel bearings.

The way to go from my contacts at reel repairs/maintenance places, is to wipe down the reels and lightly spray with like Corrosion-X - if the reels haven't gotten completely dunked in salt water while fishing.

I wipe down my rods with Pledge and spray lightly in places where salt can get in with C-X. I open side panels on certain Shimano bait casters and spray lightly there too. I don't want the salt to tighten those openings - the SALT factor.

Of course one of my friends abuses his reels and just throws them away. It's nothing to him to buy more.

I use very light pressure spray on all my high end shimanos at the car wash. I let them air dry in the pole holders on the way home. If they are still moist I wipe them down when I get home. Bantom1 on another board said thats perfectly fine as long as you use very low pressure.. After that the stella gets the neoprene cover.. Must remember I fish a dargel its a wet boat I get soaked sometimes along with my reels.. I hate to have to replace 14 bearings in the stella $$$$

After going through a few rods and reels and getting much advice I tried this:

I tried just wiping my reels down, but sometimes I would miss a spot and find salt corrosion on a winder or handle.

I found the chlorine in the water from the hose will turn the trim on some shimano's green.

I put the rigs in the shower (my wife still give's me funny looks) with warm water. The light water pressure and soap seems to give them a good rinse. No water getting under the spool or inside the body. Soft towel and then dry the reels and guides by hand. A little corrosion-X on a rag and a wipe down has been working great. I have a vertical rod rack and the last thing I do is ease the tension off the drag. Don't forget to wipe down your your lures or swivels, they corrode too.

In my 35+ years of fishing I have done numerous things, but for the last 25 years or so, I rinse my reels(all smimano spinners) while they are in the vertical position. I do this with the hose in my yard , with light pressure. If I have been at the cabin for a day or two, I will spray the reels with 409 or somthing close to help release the salt, then I hose them off. I let hem air dry for a few minutes, then wipe them down with WD 40 or Corrosion X, including the guides and reel seats. Final strep is to loosen the drag and put my cuastom reel cover on. The custom reel cover is a Crown Royal bag. They work great, are washable, and man do I like saving them, which requires product consumption!!

This method works great for me and I have very few problems with my reels

I just lightly rinse and dry, then spray with Reel Majic. Seems to keep them smooth.

I don't know how many people use it because it's def not cheap but Salt-Away is awesome. Just rinse your rods off with water and hose em down with Salt-Away and let em drip dry. My Shimano is two years old and still works like new.
