went over to the spillway on the nueces to kill some time friday night and witnessed somthin i've never seen there before in the number that were present. the tide was high and the water in the rocks was all kinds of disturbed with fish being spooked everywhere. so i get my camera and light and walk over. first thing i see are huge carp everywhere then the masses of catfish hundreds literally. all three species channels, blues, and a couple flatheads. mind you they were all small with a couple larger ones in the mix. after atleast an hour of lookin around i found a good 50 mini flounder about the size of my thumb nail, some good crappie, even a few small reds swimmin around. anyone have an idea what would have them pushed up in there like that. many of them were half out the water stackin up on eachother.

MY GUESS IS THOSE ARE FRESH WATER CATS AND THE RIVER'S SALINITY LEVEL IS EXTREME BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF FRESH WATER INFLUX- SO THEY ARE TRYING TO GET ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DAM TO THE FRESH WATER.

I grew up fishing the river and have seen that a couple of times. I agree with balztowal and think that it has to do with the lack of fresh water.

I went out there today to look it over for catfishing and I think the O2 level is too low right now. Saw lots of dead Carp and netted a bunch of Buffalo for anyone wanting them until my castnet hung and ripped.

Hope we get some rain soon because the whole river is going to be filled with dead fish...Adios

I worked all day on the river and in the back bay today. Lots of dead fish at Labonte park. The salinity at the boat ramp (which is normally under 5 ppt) was at 18 ppt. In the back of Rincon the salinity was as high as 56 ppt.

Also, there is no water in the river or bay so be careful if you venture out there. Pulled the boat through some super muddy stuff today just to get back where we needed to be.

well this is a sign that next year or so.. the fishing in the bays may not be so good...
some of you locals that been doing this longer than I have, and experienced this and can either agree or give more info.. but i remember when we had all the rains and floods, fishing was off for a while ok a long while but then it turned out great for the breeding and growth.. long droughts increase the ph, salinity, etc. and well... the fishing then just sucks.
hopefully we will get la nina and change some of this and keep the great fishing going..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this pattern we're in now known as "la nina"?

Looks like they need to release just tad bit more water from the dam. I don't mind sharing i don't water my yard anyway. I hate to mow grass. Let me add just one more thing...if we are in such a drought why are so many businesses watering the streets with water overflow from sprinkler systems....its just stupid. Shocked

Don't forget the sidewalks. They need water too.
