Has anyone tried using the large bass popper flies from Academy for Redfish during the night while wading? I picked up a few of these when they had them on sale for $0.99. They make a great rukkus on the water.

We usually throw top dogs with regular gear at night in the shallows with great luck. I thought these might be fun to try since they were so cheap.

They will work for reds, but the fish will tear the crap out of them. Don't expect the flies to last very long. The pinfish will also eat the feather off of them.

Appreciate the info. Good thing they were only $0.99. I don't mind it too much when a red destroy's your fly. Makes the story telling better afterwards.

I had a truly impressive gafftop take one of those little poppers right over a green light in a canal on PI one night. Hilarious. It about pulled me out of my kayak Laughing

I'll let you know what happens when I get down there. My first trip is scheduled for the end of April. Can't wait to get into the water. I've been having to spend my time practicing on the white bass in Lake Travis.

I know someone mentioned this before, but with Sportmans Warehouse's going out of business, they have all flies on sale for $0.50 each. Picked up quite a few this weekend in Austin. Does the San Antonio store have any left??

I had my best luck with a slider type fly. This is where the popper head is on backwards giving the fly a little less pop, but some good side to side action. Another good pattern is a crease fly. The crease fly will land softly and can be made to give a sublte or a loud pop, all depending on the retrieve.
When I was doing a lot of night time wading my best colors were purple or dark blue. They were dark enough to still stand out on moonless nights and light enough not to cast a heavy shadow on moonlit nights.
I had my best luck with #2 sizes.

Tight lines, Chris
