any one run the old ranch road back in the secret hole..
yes i modified post.. 
was thinking on running it the end of april the head down to mansfield jetties.

| There is a park ranger that posts over on the Breakaway board. He gives a report on it every once in a while. After the rain last week he said it was too wet to drive. With all the changes at PINS I am surprised they would let anyone drive on it. Would you have to drive 15MPH? There should not be any turtles back there, yes or no...? |

What are you talking about? Is there an easier way of getting to the north jetty?

NO. a section of backroad was opened two months ago for PINS personnel using heavy equipment from the 18 to the 29. it is no longer passable. even if it were, you would still have to get from the 29 to the 60. There is no magic back road that will dump you off at the Mansfield jetties.

Years ago, there was a back road that pretty much bypassed bigshell. Sometimes it was a better trip than running the beach. This brings up a nagging question in my old tired brain. Maybe one of you old timers can help me. There was a beach house, an A frame as I remember, that was used by a private individual for a number of years even after the seashore took over. It was quite a ways down the beach, I think past big shell. As I remember the owner of the house was given a "life estate" before the parks service could take over his home. What was the guys name who owned the house?

Those high tides last week would have made it a mess because it is all clay/sand flats in some areas. |

I have seen guys wading back into 9 mile hole one time in all my years and I can tell you it is a LONG walk through nasty mud. I have not heard anything about heavy equiptment going back there but if so, that is one sure way to ruin the road. Just look what they did to the Y. There are actually two back roads. The first back road starts just north of the one in the picture and goes west/north/west and ends up right at the old oilfield channels at the middle grounds. Now that is a GREAT place to kayak and wade. But sorry to say, it is not legal to drive on that road any more. I believe it was Capt. Billy who was told not to go back there anymore by a Ranger. There is no marker to tell you where the back roads start from the beach so you just have to know where to jump the dunes and I have accidently gone onto the first road a few times. If you try to go onto the back road, just make sure that it takes you west/south/west and then turns south or you are on the wrong road and need to get the heck out of there. If you get stuck back there you are in a world of hurt. I think my buddy Chris Sessions was stuck back there one time for THREE days until help arrived.

One really cool thing about the back road is the old cattle camp behind Green Hill. There used to be a road called Dunn Ranch Road that led from the green hill area past the cattle camp and ended at the back road. One more thing is this, if you have ever camped back at the Y during mosquito season(coming soon)-you have not seen squat. I got out of my truck one time back near the south end of the back road to get a beer or something and lost a pint of blood. Just leaving the windows down for a minute will get a truck full of those vultures. My old Tacoma actually had some dead mosquitos behind the plastic housing where my speedometer was. I guess they were attracted by the light and have no idea how they got there.

so much for keeping the exact locations under radar.. 
that is why i deleted the entrance location at least i have it on gps even though my tom tom say no route found.
hope fully it will dry up a little to run it.. if not not going to trun my desiel to a roosting nest for some island critters.

Big Ed...one day you and I just need to sit down and remember "How It Was"....yep the back road is the Dunn Ranch road. The old house you talking about was the Chapel Shack.....Mr & Mrs Chapel lived there for years or at lest until the park service took over...then the park service evicted them and burned the house down I think that was around '62 or '63.

that's really the whole deal, its not legal to drive on the algal mats anymore within the park, and if you get stuck back there you are SCREWED ROYALLY.
despite what you guys may see on google earth, there is NO magic back road that makes anything easier or faster than driving the low road on a low tide. otherwise we would all be using it. the back road is gone.
