Romann and Veronice invited me to go out to the Old San Patricio rattlesnake races for some sun, fun, and beer.

Veronice entered Heat 3 in lane 7 sponsored by Mann Consulting

The object of the race is to goad your snake using that long pvc pipe into moving in a straight line some 30 yards or so to the finish line. The snake wrangler is there to toss it back into the proper lane.
She went on to win! If you listen carefully you can hear what they named the snake. Very Happy

Later we ran into the board's own BarnacleBill who was cooking up the rattlesnake meat for charity. Tasty stuff but image one long ribcage Smile

Now with more fangs!

Some of the larger snakes

Another video with some nice rattling!

It was great running into Wille, Jennifer, Augs, and Josh and Lindsay out there too!

Looks like fun, even if I'm not a big fan of rattlesnake roundups.

dude, it was great. potato sack races, bat-spin races, wheelbarrow races, egg toss, it was definitely very interesting. make plans to go next year and watch Veronice defend her title.

I know a guy who used to live in Laredo and worked for the Border Patrol. He had a sweet side business selling rattle snake meat. Being a Border Patrolman he knew every rancher and ranch hand for many miles up and down the river. Sandy's "suppliers" would catch live rattle snakes and bring them to Sandy's house. He had a whole bank of very large boxes (think very large apartment mail boxes). Each supplier had a key and he would come in and drop off live snakes in his own box. Sandy would collect the snakes every few days, weigh the snakes, put them in a large pit and put the money for the snakes in that suppliers box for him to pick up the next time he dropped of a new supply of snakes. Every couple of weeks, Sandy would clean the snakes and freeze them for later sale. Sandy and his suppliers might not actually see each other for many months. He made very good money on this little part time job and many aspects of the business literally ran themselves.
