I thought the spot market in recent years has played a bigger role than in the past. As such, unsettled attitudes worldwide towards Iran's nuclear intent shot the market prices up intitially, then they backed down a bit, then Iran rattled their swords some more, including these past few days of Iranian military exercises includng high-tech, low radar signature missile tests. Couple the above with rampant development in China and your have price increases, not only on the petroleum markets, but in all kinds of construction materials and equipment used in the massive infrastructure build-up occuring in China. Even if Iran is corraled and those fears settled, it will continue to be China's development and huge drain on all types of resources that will keep upward pressure on prices.

Diamond Shamrock is owned outright by Valero. All the Diamond Shamrock stores in San Antonio have been renamed Valero sotores, and those will be done soon too.

You should not throw stones at glass houses Mr.C; it’s not the refinery worker that’s making the money but the companies they work for. Also its individuals like your self keep them in business by driving the big SUV’s.

No, I wasn't throwing glasses at refinery people! I wish you hadn't made that insinuation. Refinery workers are merely workers... numbers. I use to be one of those numbers... I had worked for Exxon and FHR!!! The "Corporations" make the money for their shareholders/stock owners. I use to own healthy stock in Exxon. Sold it. Bummer. If I had held on, I'd probably have $500 K by now. Nope, just some miscalculation on my part for the financial need at the time like having Twins and providing for high costs associated with multiple births. Now, I connect my wallet directly to the fill nozzle on my Sub filling up with 87 octane. I drive that monster because it's my rolling "billboard" and it's paid for, plus it's not in my budget for another vehicle. Even getting a more fuel efficient vehicle will not necessarily will have a payoff until many years later. I did the math. Note: As far as refinery workers, I'm all for workers making much as possible!!! Most business org's don't care about their workers... they have to stay in business and think only about $$$. Not the days of "Father Knows Best" business climate days. So, ALL workers need to make much as possible and look out for themselves. From my Exxon, FHR, and corporate experiences, when profits are made and growth targets are reached, then mgt. has plans for payout incentives to employees! That's how workers are kept relatively content for the time being.

Peace

You can be rest assured that even the "average" paid refinery worker will probably be getting a bigger and meaner car and house than most people. They'll probably have badder fishing reels than most people too because of the refineries making huge profits from the sale of gas and diesel. That's good that other hard working people do good financially. However, should big refinery corporations take huge profits from the wallets/purses of average wage earners that depend on getting to work and home using their vehicles? Is there a moral dilema? Yes, supply and demand is working.

Sorry it’s just a little hard to swallow after your statement. Not all refinery workers make the big bucks.
