Here is something for all you biologicalistic types to ID for me. Found what appears to be a jaw bone from a fish and was wondering what kind of fish it came from. It may be from a baby or half grown or adult. It measures 2 1/4 inches long the largest teeth are 1/8th inch tall. I dont know if this is a lower or upper jaw bone.

I'm guessing Spanish Mackerel.

Tyler, don't forget the other toothy critter with a small jaw, the bluefish. Not sure what it is.

I thought bluefish as soon as I saw the teeth: They are relatively small, triangular, flattened and serrated, just like a bluefish.

CS and Topdog, I bow your infinite knowledge. I forgot about those toothy little beasties. I go with moray.

I thought all of the dead eels were shrimp eels Smile I saw a brown, black and white banded moray snorkeling last week off of Las Animas.

Here is a moray eel skull. It could be a different species but this one's teeth curve inward

I'd stay away from it, if it were alive with all those teeth.

not a bluefish, teeth are much closer and have a rounder profile. Don't think its a moray either, not the right shape. That said, I haven't got the slightest idea what it could be. cool find.

From the skeleton mount, looks like I nailed the lower jaw part. What particular species is that mount? There are 12 different species of morays in the Gulf of Mexico, so my guess is a wild one.

But like other have pointed out, definitely not a bluefish.

I don't know what species that is but it was one of several of which that didn't show the straight up position of the teeth in the example.

Not to be accused of being a virtual biologist but look at the lower teeth of this King Mackerel.

I may be wrong Regis, but Spanish Mackerel is my final answer Smile
