Johnny,

Now ya have dozens of pics to stream online that don't "waste" Tyler's bandwidth. I can only claim one friend in this link, a professional guide out of British Columbia who made this trip....Just sit back, relax and watch the slideshow! (Must have DSL for this connection and newer computer.)

I only wish I could have told my employer to ....well, to quote David Allen Cole/Johnny Paycheck, "Take this job and shove it," but I couldn't, to make this memorable trip!

Those are some awesome shots! Love to see all those Dolly Varden and rainbows. Think I recognised scenery from the Sterling Highway north of Cooper Landing and along Kenai Lake all the way to Homer. If I'm not mistaken, that ramp where they put in the drift boats and rafts is just upsteam from where C.H.'s cousins have their B&B. Somebody drifting by their place saw the Texas Aggie flag flying from the mast and remarked how convenient it was to have an ATM at the dock. Laughing

These pics were posted by a friend. Thus it wasn't my camera. I use a Canon Powershot with 8 Gig card. It enhances the colors to unbelievable heights to the point it is bewildering, but its not a true "snapshot" as seen with the naked eye at times. Here is a pic I took of highbush cranberries, in perfect time and true in color, of which I have a few gallons in the freezer from this fall picking:

Glad to know that you know some of these pics were around Homer....Oops! The temptation and eagerness to post overided my duty to accurately delineate between the Upper Kenai and further south on the peninsula. Glad you could point that out; but nonetheless we still have something to enjoy!

Oh, if you viewed my kenai/russian river pics and noticed how blurry my black bear pics were, then know I am a Texan and tourist myself. I was shaking so bad, just knowing that my stringer of Reds was dinner, or it was me!...And to factor in my camera has "anti-shake" technology proves what an "outdoorsman" I'd like to think I am but am not! Embarassed

Just wish my urine-soaked hip waders did! LOL Laughing

And, Johnny? Answer me this question, the strangest this side of physics:

Why can't a photo ever truly represent the glacial blue of the Kenai? Anyone with a 110 camera and 200 film could capture it in the Carribean but not in Alaska...Weird!

Will make a wild guess based on the little I know of how the color is derived from the glacial "flour" in the first place. The blue is a product of light refracting/reflecting off the tiny particles of silt within the water column, very much like the blue of the sky comes from those effects of atmospheric particulates in a large volume of air, and the colors of an opal come from light being passed through sub-microscopic diffraction gratings made of columns of tiny spheres in the stone. However, both the Kenai's color and an opal's fire are notoriously hard to photograph because, I think, the reflection from their surfaces somehow masks the effects from beneath their surfaces. If that theory is correct, it should be possible to use a filter or find a proper angle to photograph the interior colors of both.

Speaking of reflections, I think I recognised the location of a couple of the photograph sites near the beginning of your photo series. It's Tern Lake, just off the Sterling Highway near the junction to Seward.

Thank you for the remarkable and insightful reply.

I'll ask my friend where those opening shots were taken. I could camp out there forever....well, at least during the summer time, with a light jacket since you know the temperatures can range from mid-50 highs in June and low 40s at night, in July!

Without going into my private photobucket account, can you name this lake? You've passed it a gazillion times. Hint, the alpine peaks that are perfect for blueberry picking?

Ditto on the Fireweed. I do not think its Skilak or Kenai lake. Might be a lake before Kenai lake. I think it has a small campground on it.
