Me n a buddy were fishing Mon morning around the twenty with only a three footer of something.....

ID please

also catching skipjacks and a large gafftop which hit his brand new 6/0. Laughing

Effects were in the air. Itchy throat, nostrils burning and eye irritation. Thousands of mullet and pelicans working them. Headed home round 2pm.

That was Monday morning.
Wednesday morning.
After seeing the pics here about the washed up fish, we decided we wanted to see it for ourselves. Left the black top at PINS around 730 this morning and right off the bat, Dead fish. Shocked

Bout a mile down started to see some reds on shore. Big ones!

Must have seen a couple hundred of these damn things.

Only saw about 3 or 4 trout. Figured this one went 22"

Even pulled the ghost shrimp out from hiding

Whiting, hardheads, sand trout, mullet, shad, am I missing something Confused

sneezing and coughing from the red tide and gagging from the smell of decaying fish. In the background you can see the mm sign. Only have 2wd and didn't wanna chance not having an area to turn around at. Driving was good up to where we went. You can see the tide line.

Only went to the 5mm and turned around. Evident that the farther south we went, the thicker the concentration of fish there were. Couldn't imagine what it looked like farther south. Hit the north sticks entrance and it was no where as bad but were there were hardly any birds down around the 5mm, the birds were having a feast! Drove all the way towards Bob Hall with the windows rolled down sneezing and coughing looking to see something big washed up and saw this guy.

26" trout. Now my biggest has only been 23 1/2" so to see this, I was amazed and saddened.

Didn't see any sharks, smacks or stingrays. Heard about a tarpon washing up around the twenties. Wanted to swing by packery real quik, but need to get back home to sleep before going to work. No idea on how long its gonna be before fishing may be feasible again.............

Wow, sad but great report and photos. The crazy faced fish is a lookdown, the spotted unknown fish is a southern stargazer. I can't remember the eel name but one of the biology majors should be able to id it.

the eel is a species of snake eel in the family Ophichthidae, its the genus Bascanichthys, but not sure what particular species it is. Man those pictures are horrible. Spiny little thing is probably a burrfish, genus Chilomycterus

Went out today 10-14-09 to packery and red tide was present with only a small amount of dead fish, Looked to the north and could see the water clearer futher to the north. red tide was stronger in the channel,Left to the back side of packery in the bay and was much better. Cool

today at BHP and south packery I saw spadefish, irish pompano, snook, stargazers, eels, hardheads, mullet, ladyfish, pigfish, lookdown, croaker, pinfish, and probably a few i can't remember. the respiratory symptoms were bad.

I was at N Packery at 10 ish, the dead fish were just showing up between the time I arrived and left at about 1230 the numbers of dead went from about 40 to several hundred, sad to see a 20+ flounder and several snook floating in the channel. Mullet were still running strong but after netting a dozen or so, I gave up (couldn't keep them alive in a bucket more than a minute). Pretty strong aresal all along the jetty, so I decided to head to NASCC, much better conditions/fishing in the bays.

Should be at Port A by tonight, the current looks pretty bad color wise and pushing about 3 MPH to the north.
