Spent the 9/5-9/7 fishing the waters around Port Aransas. Primarily fished out arounf the North Jetty's. We caught of share Smacks that were balling up bait all of the place. The resaon I am posting is because we were created with what I feel are very unussual occurances fishing at night.

On Sunday night we found massive schools of skip jack working right the the ship channel, very close to the marina. They could be caught on every cast with anything that would reflect. We had the pleasure of feeding them to the dolphins that were coming up and sitting under the boat looking at us. The school was probably the size of 3 or 4 football fields.

Monday Night we found the skip jack in the same place. This time we anchored up to see if anything was cleaning up the mess below. 20 minutes later on under sized tackle we pull up the anchor to chase what would turn out to be a Ling. It was about 3ft plus. We got it up to boat on the it pulled the swivel straight. Right about now you are thing I am crazy. Well so did we. Until an hour later we get the second Ling to the boat, again in the 3ft range and this time we have it in our hands on it before the crimp from a store bought 100lb leader failed. In the next hour we would procede to boat a 30in Ling, a 34in red, and decent size red snapper, among an array of hard heads and gaftop. During the the 5hr sat there wondering what was going on below the surface and what was causing it we were brokem off 10+ times. Not by the fish, but the the bottom structure in the area. Who knows how many quality fish were under us.

So does anyone have any explinations? We were probably a mile from the end of the Jetty's. There was very little tide movement. Visibilty was 6 to 8ft. The skips were there the entire time the bite as on, when the skips left the bite seemed to die, but this was at 3 am. All fished bit on cut skipjack.

There is an old saying.....

"If you watch the same patch of ocean for long enough, something exciting will happen"....

Don't have any good explanations, but I would consider a new line of swivel manufacturer, given the brand you had got 2 of them straightened! The ling close to shore is nothing out of the ordinary. The red snapper a mile off the jetties is not too common (but then, what is your definition of decent?).

Glad you had fun, but please don't feed the dolphins. It's illegal and trains them to come steal the fish off fishermen's hooks.

My party, too, fished from the end of jetty into the channel at night as well as the day time during the Labor Day weekend. We boated one nice ling that was just a little too short to keep, and we hooked up with others. The night picture is just too blurry to post. Caught a wide assortment of species, including a softball sized octopus. Way fun, especially for the newbies who had never seen some of these up close and personal. I found the target species, reds and trout,just a little hard to find in good quantity, though.

we were approximately a mile inside the jetty's. We were very close to were the Lydia Ann, Aransas and Ship Channel come together. We are definitely rethinking tackle, but have never this issue fishing in the channels.
