Dredging in Packery Channel to begin in early November, according to the article written by Dale Rankin in the Padre Moon. "The Island Newspaper". The story said that in early Otober crews are set to move equipment on the beach near So. Packery Jetty.
The article said that the city is going to finish the boat ramps.
The project should last three months.
I was wishing they would just let it sand in...

| There only dredging the boat launch area. They won't get close to the jetties except to run equipment to the seawall. |

Yes they are dredging the area around the boatramp...but the article also states that..."The other site for dredging is the area between the seaward end of the jetties known by boaters as The Washing Machine. The third sandbar from shore about the same distance from the beach as the end of the jetties and the churning water in the space between the end of the jetties. The dredging will remove the sand and also, by dredging this part of the channel deeper is designed to keep it from filling in."
That's what they say...and the dredge material will be placed on the north side of the jetties and in front of the seawall.
Looks like they might be closing the rocks down to fishing ..

I hope your wrong about the jetties being closed to fishing from Nov-Jan.
But I had planned on learning to longcast from the surf, even though I prefer to fish a little more actively.
The jetties have done alot for the ULM & the CCBay imo, although I'm not a bi/ecologist. It saves alot of time/money for folks on the island with OS boats to get out too.
I hope thats all they do; I wouldn't wanna see paved parking on the beach or permanent restrooms along the jetties. I think they should add the handicapped accesses though (near the boat ramp) where parking already exsists and restrooms could be more easily erected/maintained. |

There's sure lots of different opinions here about these jetties, etc. I think it's great that everyone can voice their opinions here.
My take is that I'm happy to hear of the dredging. I have never caught so many different species of fish in one place, ever. I enjoy the flattop surface and ease of getting to the water and a place that I have a chance of catching some good keeping fish for a change. I've heard that the influx of new gulf water has been good for the Upper Laguna Madre. My Grandkids love to watch the sea turtles out there. It's a great resourse if we take care of it. Just my 2 cents.

Capt. Mike and OutCast, I just spent a week writing up the history of and justifications for the Packery jetty parks amenities, then emailing several megs to CastnBlast and Nelda Martinez as ammunition for the briefing on the status of the Packery TIF improvements the City staff promised the City Council next month.
It's taken an outlay of 30 million tax dollars to set up the Packery Project, including putting aside through the TIF millions in revenue from the City's General Fund that for 20 years could have been spent on fixing roads, instead. I want the parks we paid for, including those free hard-surfaced parking lots, restrooms, showers, shade pavilions, concessions, kids play areas, and especially the handicapped access ramps to each of those improvements. I don't care if the seawall falls down, but as long as we have to place the sand that fills in the channel somewhere, we may as well restore the seawall beach so we can reopen and drive on it. I can only guess why anyone would throw that investment away, saying they'd prefer the channel silted in or that they don't want jetty parking and restrooms. Afraid of the competition? _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

Johnny I think I figured out your afraid of competition question...nope I'm not at all. I don't fish the Gulf. Sorry I hurt your feeling by stating my wishes about the Packery Channel. But, It was your choice to do the write
up on the history and justifications. I as a individual don't really care if you write anything up or not. The packery has been nothing but a source of problems since it was dredged and from what I have see there hasn't been much of a plus to the enviroment or the economy.
So you have your opinion about what needs to be done and I have mine.

It's not so much your opinion of Packery I disagree with as your solution. I tend to approach problems by looking for ways to fix them, not by turning my back on them.
Re "competition," in your case, if we fixed up and made Packery as attractive as it was promised to be when we voted for it in April 2001, maybe you'd lose only a few clients who took their families to the park instead of booking a trip with you. Others, knowing how good the fishing is there already despite the lack of park amenities, don't want to share with those families. If you prefer to be known for having other motives for letting Packery stagnate, jump right in and enlighten us. Those who'd prefer to see the parks built, let them come down to City Hall when the TIF briefing finally is scheduled and lend your hands and voices in support.
Tyler, sorry this exchange has gone on so long, but you've seen the effort I made this week. Do me the favor of posting a poll along the lines of who is in favor of maintaining the channel and fixing up the jetty parks, and who wants the channel to silt in and the jetty area left the way it is. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!
