Anyone ever try/own a Pelican Getaway 100 fishing kayak. Looking to purchase my first yak, but not sure I would notice the difference between a $400 dollar kayak and a $900. Any advice?

Huge difference!!!!!!!!

That Pelican is like sitting on top of a balloon when the wind is blowing. You will end up spending more time paddling and correcting your position than you will fishing in that boat. Do yourself a big favor and look for a better used boat than a new cheap boat.

thanks, good to know. Any ones you might suggest. Or better yet, anyone looking to sell one Smile. Maybe going out and renting one for a weekend might be a good idea as well.

Stop by Jerry B's and Wind & Wave to see when they will have another demo day. This way there will be lots of kayaks in the water for you to try out. I know at both locations they will take off the price of the kayak the cost of the rental.
As GoinCoastal mentioned get a good used kayak. I had a Castaway to get me started and it was ok for Point A --> Point B but I fish more so I notice a big difference. Now proud owner of 2 Prowlers!
It may seem like alot but there have been some really nice kayaks with rudders between 550-700 range. Check out www.texaskayakfisherman.com and go to the Items for sale.
Good Luck!

definitely go paddle a few and see what is comfortable for you. As a member of the Wilderness Systems pro staff, I would love to see you in a WS kayak. But that's my bias.....

Seriously, stay with the bigger brands like WS, Perception, OK, Native, Heritage for instance. These companies actually have real designers designing boats for the most part for fishing. For bay fishing, you want a longer boat for longer paddles. If you fish for hours at a time, you want to be able to sit side-saddle on the boat. Think about how you like to fish and then do some research on th eweb (texaskayakfisherman.com is excellent) about what yaks others are using for that and why. It won't take long befor eyou will have a short list of boats that interest you. Then start watching TKF classifieds and craigslists in Houston & Austin. You will find a good boat that you want for not much more than that Pelican. Also check with your local kayak shop. They will be getting their new models this month and may have a good deal on one of the rentals. You picked the right time of year to start looking.

Good price for a good "starter boat" - if it's in good shape.

tyler is making you a great deal, a rudder alone is 200 bucks, if you can get a better yak, if you want to buy new make sure you buy from wind & wave or jerry b's both are great places, and they are local, and will help you out, they just carry different brands of boats, and the folks at both stores yak too, so they have experience

try before you buy

Best advice is to test paddle every possible yak you can. Go to Jerry B's and he will set you up. Even if you get a good deal on a kayak you do not like it still is wrong. Kayaks need to be custom to your needs. I am huge but still like my Wilderness 120, mostly because of where and how I kayak. TEST DRIVE everything once, and the one your interested in two or three times.

awesome advice guys, I will have to paddle of bunch of them before I buy. Tyler that does sound like a great deal. That model kayak alone cost that much new. Before I spend 700 though I need to test a few.
