Hello Board,
I am planning to visit the Corpus area at the end of the month (28-31st). My wife is pregnant with our first, and this is our last vacation before she gets too far along and she wants to do some fishing along with some site seeing. I found this board linked from the texas fisherman forum board.
Anyways, I was hoping some of you might be willing to share some ideas of where to fish while we are there. I am bringing my 78 Montauk with me, and it will actually be my wife's first time to try saltwater fishing. We are planning to keep the boat at the Municipal Marina. I have not talked to teh marina directly but my wife called them and reserved some dry dock storage for $7.00/day. I do have a Top-Spots map for the area that I haven't looked at too much (yet). I regularly fish Matagorda but I have never been down as far as Corpus with the boat. I plan to bring my normal gear consisting of 2 setups for bottom fishing, and 2 setups for popping cork w/shrimp, and some lures.
Another thing I am not sure about is the security at the marina. If anyone is familiar with the storage there please let me know what I might expect.
Any recommendations, suggestions, or tips for this area would be greatly appreciated. I did try searching some but did not find too much info.
THX

I wish I could help you, but I don't have a boat so don't know any "spots". Besides I would think that wind conditions, current, structure, and bait would dictate which locations are going to be holding fish as opposed to someone's honey hole. Jay Watkins offers a seven day pass to his fishing journal for like $50 bucks, but he doesn't normally fish the Corpus area. You could check that out. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Best luck,

you have only allowed 37 minutes between responses which means we are working or limiting out on fish or getting a sun burn.
If marina is dowtown Corpus, they have security there, but I would not leave anything in the boat for a grab and go.
Again, if marina downtown, target rigs in Corpus Christi bay if winds are calm. With your boat, it should not be a problem. Nueces bay has been producing; just target the reefs, they are everywhere.
Free line, cork, or artificials.
Good luck!! |

Woohoo replies! I'm not really looking for anyones honey holes or anything. I definitely wouldn't expect anyone to even give those up. I'm just mainly looking for things not too far from the marina. I don't have GPS so I'm not looking to travel too far off, especially with the wife being pregnant. I do have an old fish finder to keep an eye on water depth though. Of course winds and weather will play a major role. If conditions are too bad I won't even venture out but if it's nice I'd like to know whether it's better to head south along the west shoreline out of the marina, or north towards the bridge past the USS and maybe fish the channel. I'll look on the map I have to see if I can locate some of the rigs. Sorry for poking atcha about the replies. I was just mainly messing around.
Thx again.

| I suggest ditching the marina idea and putting in somewhere in the bluff. Not sure what your boat is, but you'll proably have better luck with a shorter, drier, and smoother boat ride if you do that. Maybe Billings, Bluff Landings, or Marker 37. |

Why would you ditch the marina idea>? I guess I could just store it there and then pull it elsewhere if need be. I just didn't want to leave it at the Hotel where we are staying, and the marina is not far from the hotel. Do you know if any of those other places offer storage?
My boat is a 1978 17' Boston Whaler Montauk
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look those up tonight when I get home and see if I can find some more info. |

Do yourself a BIG favor and go to Wallyworld or Academy and buy a Garmin E Trec. $98, easy to use, easy to edit coordinates, everything you need in a small, cheap, simple package. It's REALLY NICE to be able to mark a good spot when I find one and come right back on top of it next time I go. This GPS has WAAS capability and that means that on open water it's usually accurate to 4-10 feet!!!!! _________________ Dave

| If you are staying at Bluff's Landing you are allowed to use their wet slips free of charge during your stay. |

Well if you are staying downtown you might as well fish from the marina. Fishing can be great in that area of Corpus bay. You can drift right outside the marina or fish the rigs/ oil platforms for specks, sand trout, and sheepshead, and maybe a mangrove snapper. The winds will let you know your abilities. You can just get out there and drift tossing live shrimp under a popping cork. If you do come over to the bluff island area stay in the channels and fish the edges. Stay out fo the flats unless you are familiar with the area or else your wife will have to jump out and push the boat not only is she pregnant but its hot out there, you don't want to get a heat stroke trying to pull her back in the boat. Have a great time, on your vacation. IMS _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I came back from lunch to a ton of great info. THX for all the replies everyone.
landlocked beachbum, Thanks for the recommendation. I will take you up on it and check into this. I'm pretty familiar with the upper coast locations so I've never really bothered with getting a gps yet but it would be nice to have. I've heard good things about that particular model you mentioned from some of my research in the past.
ironmanston, Thanks for the good ideas. You are right about those shallow flats. Last thing I want to do is get grounded with just my wife on board. I've heard it is pretty shallow down in that area. It sounds like the rigs might be a good idea if it's not too choppy, and right outside of that marina along the rocks might not be bad either.
Tyler, that was a very good article you posted. Thanks for sharing it. I really enjoyed the read. I agree that fish can be everywhere and that there really isn't a guarantee when it comes to any spot. I do like those fishing maps though. I don't really use them for the spots but more or less for a feel of the area, water depth, and structures. I also love messing around on google earth.
It's nice to hear that you also have a montauk. I bought mine not long ago because I wanted to fish more with my dad. We were always wade fisherman and he had never owned a boat. I wanted to share some good times with him before it was too late. So far that boat has been nothing but good to us. If you own a whaler you probably already know about continuouswave.com if not, check it out when you get some time. Tons of good info on there.
I'm really looking forward to my vacation down there. It seems like you all have a great forum here. I appreciate all of the replies and if anyone else has more suggestions, warnings, tips or anything else to add please do share.
THX

Hi Capt. Mike,
I live in Cypress, it's just outside Houston (NW side). Most of my fishing is done in Matagorda making day trips. My wife has yet to go with us and it will be just me and her this time so I'm really looking forward to this trip. |
